The Dirty Energy Source

Do you want to make a spreadsheet about spreadsheets?
Do you still need to figure out what two other fandoms you should request beside the only one you really want fic for?
Or are you trolling ALL the letter posts for placeholders, just so you can write those people some nice, dry coal?

We want to know all about it.

I can see why some people wouldn't, but I'm fine with that. I'm not THAT hung up on the opinion of a bunch of nameless people on an anon meme, you know? Good place to vent =/= source of all my validation.

That said, I went overboard replying to the last reply because the coalie made such a weird, illogical leap from what I actually said (somebody seems to have taken a lot of what I wrote, passed it off as their own and it's made me not want to treat them) to somehow reading "la! I am a brilliant diamond, people want the words I write!"

I mean, maybe some very young people assume if somebody copies their words, their words must be extra good? But plagiarism never automatically means the person you're stealing from is super-special. It just means the plagiarist is desperately uncreative.

Oh yes, also Maleficent, for similar reasons. I'm just super picky, but I have seen one I might do!

Okay, I'll bite: why in the WORLD have at least two of you, now, assumed a presumption of "uniqueness" on my part? I said somebody recycled my words, not that I'd found a pet unicorn. Not only have I said I deal with plagiarism every day (so clearly I don't think I'm the only person it's ever happened to) but honestly, what is it in peoples' brains that somehow goes from "looks like somebody took what I wrote and did a cheap facelift, and now I don't want to match with them" to "LOOK HOW SPECIAL I AM!"

(which is why I'm not that other coalie, either; I don't see a reason to be flattered by somebody else's creative deficits. I could actually make a better argument for the inverse: "that work is so unlikely to be noticed/remembered, they thought they'd be safe in stealing it")

Plagiarism is ridiculously pedestrian. It doesn't instantly reflect well on the person whose words were copied; that's such an illogical conclusion. When somebody takes your shoes, do you use it as proof that you are the best runner ever? Nobody jogs like you, yeah! I mean, seriously. Don't you just assume the thief is maybe kind of poor, desperate, possibly barefoot, and dishonest?

I'm no longer offering a fandom and I felt bummed about it. I came here to bitch about that because there's no way I'd vent about this in namespace. That would mean pointing out an (intellectually) desperate, barefoot and dishonest person for the examination of a bunch of people, instead of the few who share their fandoms and may still want to treat them. We may have a reputation for being kind of awful, here, but I choose to only deserve part of that.

Rest assured, the sun will still rise without the collective credulity of _coal.

It's actually a pretty decent movie and a good commentary on the shit Hollywood pulls when making films, especially Oscar bait.

I would assume that you will be able to put in other handles that you may be known by? But they want to be able to link it to known accounts/participants in some way other than just chat handles so that someone isn't like "Oh yes, I am totally heavensqueen or TheColurClear, pls to write fic about how I am teh Devil and am gonna ruin Yuletide 4 evah!

Mine three!

(OK, it's not posted yet. But I'm working on the section for my any fandom and it really does mention every nommed character enthusiastically because I am very enthusiastic about them all!)

wow, you sound like a pretentious asshole. i had no problem with your claims of plagiarism but this tl;dr is just embarrassing.

I would guess that the idea is that people can opt in with a better idea of what they might be getting themselves in for, since they can see the requests first and not be like "Oh man I did not sign up to be part of a chat orgy D:"

Last year they let people opt in to different ratings, but if that was overly complicated, and maybe this year they decided not to and it will be all or nothing? In which case, seeing requests first makes more sense?

This is all pure speculation on my part!

I dunno, I'm more embarrassed about the lack of caps.

Aw, coalie. If you embarrass that easily, maybe take a break? This may not be the place for you.

Based on their prompts in past years, I know who I'd like to be matched with, but I'm still waiting for her letter. (Taps foot impatiently.)

lol oh coalie. oh, oh my sweet summer coalie. Maybe if two people think you sound pretentious when you say "a letter that describes in vague terms the kind of fic I'd like to read has been PLAGIARIZED FROM ME!" when in reality all Yuletide letters sound the same, maybe the problem is with you, and you really are the one coming across as a pretentious special snowflake.

OH HEY, someone listed like eight separate prompts that are basically the entire plot/tone of the epic I wanted to write in this fandom but was never sure if anyone wanted. I like you, person who appears to be new to my teensy fandom!

That's awesome, I'd love to think somebody was that hopeful to be matched with me. I hope she posts it soon!

Things I would categorically hate to encounter:
- heterosexual sex of any sort, explicit or implied

This cracked me up when I read it. This person wants no heteros and they are just boldly throwing it right out there.

What counts as "implied" though? Should I throw in an offhand remark that every character in the story was conceived through IVF?

If you can't vent about this in namespace, you shouldn't say it here.

Re: Letters that are perfect except for one small detail

(Anonymous) 2014-10-21 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay that's fair; if you genuinely believe all letters read the same, and if other people are the same way, that really does explain their confusion. If everything you read comes across as sounding the same to you, it would be almost impossible to tell the difference from one letter to the other, and that would make it difficult to understand how somebody else can.

Personally, I am now off to read a pile of things that sound bad in lots of different ways ;) Wish me luck!

uck. The one person I didn't want joining Yuletide because she always offers at least one of the fandoms I request has signed up. Sorry, but she can't write for shit. Now I have to change one of my fandoms and I really wanted it, but not written by her (which has a huge chance of happening since it is a small fandom).
