The Dirty Energy Source

Do you want to make a spreadsheet about spreadsheets?
Do you still need to figure out what two other fandoms you should request beside the only one you really want fic for?
Or are you trolling ALL the letter posts for placeholders, just so you can write those people some nice, dry coal?

We want to know all about it.

So basically ... ESL person doing Yuletide, so lets go point and laugh?

Not a YT mod, but I mod another exchange and AO3 shows you the number of noms for each fandom. For example:

Orphan Black (x7)

That's what shows up for us but no indication of WHO nominated it.

Why would you assume bad spelling and grammar = ESL?

Only esl people are allowed to like manga now??

As a fervent B/C shipper in my fandom, a letter asking for B and C's epic love would make my Yuletide, and I'd struggle to write something nice for A/B. I'd suggest not offering either B or C, that way you can both get matched with a better fit.

Why would you assume that they were ESL? Also it's not like they linked to the person.

I've thought for the last couple of years that it might be really, really useful to have an anonymous Yuletide survey in the first half of January. It could include questions about how often people misused Any, how many letters cheated on fandoms or characters, and then you could have loads of fun things like how many treats people wrote, whether they got matched to someone they predicted getting matched to if they were trying to control it, and how many fandoms everyone requested/offered versus nominations - you know, all that stuff people on here dig up for fun but which takes hours. It would be a lot of work to set up, but it would be a pretty quick post-Yuletide check-in and I think some of the data would honestly be useful, particularly since a lot of people seem to be of the 'not going to report someone even if they break the rules' mindset. I'm not blaming them; last year someone wrote me coal from an OC POV that just recapped the plot of the movie, and I didn't say anything to anyone because what would it accomplish?

Lol, this should go in the 'Things you could change' thread.

Magical breasts fic?? Deets, please.

Re: Change One Thing

(Anonymous) 2014-10-23 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's happened very often. Certainly not enough times to require extra rules to try and prevent it (at the expense of people Doing Yuletide Right).

ayrt I'm not a native speaker of English either? Knowing spelling and grammar has nothing to do with whether it's your native language or not. Lots of native speaker write like five-year-olds. Lots of ESL speakers write excellent English. I just think it doesn't make a very good impression if your letter for a writing exchange makes it look like you can't write for shit.

I started one today! It feels a little crazy, writing before signups even close, but I just love the prompt too much.

Don't worry about writing "too early" anon! I've already received a giftfic based on my letter!

I think the way she used the little icons in this one is super cute:

We don't share any fandoms, but I came across it and I'm kind of wishing I could steal it for my own letter's formatting. I'm gonna do it next year.

Re: Bad Letters

http://katekane.livejournal.com/3474.html

The Pippi Longstocking one is basically "redeem a character I disliked in canon and make me like her because I'm uncomfortable disliking a woman".

The Home Alone request is "write me a genderswap and issuefic about poverty because the thieves look poor".

Re: Writing

I started a treat Monday. Probably it'll end up being 3k of cute tropes.

Unless I get assigned to write this particular prompt (or finish my assignment early), in which case it'll be 15k of wilderness survival and banter.

Sweet jesus I thought you must have been exaggerating

So what I would like is a new Home Alone holiday story that might satisfy my inner left wing liberal feminist! Can you genderswap the scenario somewhat for me, please? Make Kevin a girl and perhaps one or both of the thieves a woman? And offer up some backstory to the thieves and turn them into three-dimensional characters? Explain why they act the way they do? (Obviously, poverty plays a part.)
