The Dirty Energy Source

Do you want to make a spreadsheet about spreadsheets?
Do you still need to figure out what two other fandoms you should request beside the only one you really want fic for?
Or are you trolling ALL the letter posts for placeholders, just so you can write those people some nice, dry coal?

We want to know all about it.

Speaking personally, I would love it if someone stopped by my letter to say hello. I love making new Yuletide friends in namespace.

DO IT! People definitely do - I've had it happen to me multiple times before - and it's a great way to get in the Yuletide spirit.

Also, not to promise anything, but if people comment on my letter, I personally check theirs out too & see if I can write them treats. ;)

+1 I think there was a post on the member com one year where people listed things they'd offered that had no requests, though.

1) If there's no chance of your writing them a treat or matching with them, comment now.

2) If you may write them a treat or get matched with them, but are very good at keeping shit like that hush-hush, comment now.

3) If you maybe want to treat them but have a question about their prompts, comment now and do it anon.

I'm not really looking for fandom friends ever during Yuletide (I'll squee with you in the comments of our fic but I'll get shifty when you ask for my twitter or tumblr un), but even I wouldn't be put off by someone trying to strike up conversation.

Me too! None of the fandoms I've offered have any requests yet. (Except for the one I requested myself, and mine's the only request for that so far.)

AYRT

I was all excited by this for a moment, and then I realized that would out people who like to keep their offers secret. Unless anon commenting was on...

If you like my letter, I'd be delighted if you commented on it--just to compliment it, to squee about something, whatever! Also if there's something seriously off with it, I wouldn't necessarily mind comments on that, as long as it's constructive and not just torrents of abuse.

Yikes, I forgot about that! Anon commenting was definitely on, so maybe it was here or ffa instead? Having it anon at the member com this year would be awesome, though!

That's late. :( I had hoped it would be right after sign-ups. Thanks.

Re: One book

(Anonymous) 2014-10-19 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds wonderful. And it's actually a canon relationship, not just slashy?

Re: Ask _coal

(Anonymous) 2014-10-19 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
That's why _coal begs and cries over letters. If people don't post their letter, you have no idea what requests are out there and it makes treating impossible.

If you get an assignment with no optional details and nobody else in the fandom posted a letter, you're basically fucked unless you can come up with a 1k worthy idea yourself.

Go for it! I'd love to get comments on my letter, meet other people who are interested in my tiny fandoms, and talk about those fandoms with them. Seriously, just go ahead, no need to wait.

This. I'd love if someone pointed out to me if I phrased something in an unclear way or so.

Nah, go be social, coalie.

Has anyone ever talked to the mods about this? It seems like a really odd way to do things and I wonder what their reasons are.

The one thing I hate about Yuletide

(Anonymous) 2014-10-19 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been doing Yuletide since the beginning and I love it but there's only one thing I hate about it and that's how much people profess to love these small fandoms and then never read or write them outside of Yuletide (Hockey RPF nonwithstanding). I always read and write YT-fandoms outside of Yuletide and the feedback ratio is so different they're on different planets.

Give us some love outside of Yuletide!

Re: Diversity

(Anonymous) 2014-10-19 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I wouldn't even notice unless I had matched on several of my recip's requests. I MIGHT side-eye a list of requests where I knew the canons were diverse, but my recip had only requested a certain type of person . . . but really it would depend on how the letter was written. I try not to judge people too harshly for things like wanting shipfic and preferring slash or femslash, so they only requested men or women.

Oh yeah. Absolutely a canon relationship. With sex and everything.

I think I've done it before. I say go for it. If you do it now, the person will know you can't possibly be asking for assignment reasons, because there are no assignments yet.

And, possible new friend in your fandom(s)! It's hard to go wrong there. :D

Re: The one thing I hate about Yuletide

(Anonymous) 2014-10-19 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Here's my problem:

I want to write fic for these fandoms, but I can't because I have no ideas for them. I need prompts to make that happen. If there was an year round kink meme for Yuletide eligible fandoms where people could drop off prompts and run, I'd camp out there year round.

Since that isn't a thing, I sign up for other exchanges and offer my small fandoms when other people requests them. I also make gifsets and graphics of my small fandoms on tumblr.

Other than that, I got nothin.

Re: The one thing I hate about Yuletide

(Anonymous) 2014-10-19 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
But I'm a lot likelier to read random things outside my usual fannish sphere for Yuletide, not least because YT makes them so much easier to find! IDK how I'd go about browsing "random fic from small fandoms" during the year. Basically if it's not a Marvel comic (which tag I browse periodically) and isn't recced to me somehow, I will never even see it.

Although, I should maybe follow the NYR comm again. That'd be one way to go about finding new small fandom things.

I think the person who did it last year has said something about putting the post up soon.

Re: how to un-tl;dr requests for signups

(Anonymous) 2014-10-19 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I always include any fandom-specific DNWs, plus a line or two about what I'm looking for in that fandom, and then choose one or two specific prompts. You can always tack on a "More details in my letter!" to make sure they know you have more to say :-)

Intimidating letters

Have you come across letters that seem intimidating or really demanding? Do you like those kinds of letters?
