Re: Requested a person or character associated with scandal? You may be entitled to an extra gift!

No, the point is that a writer shouldn't be expected to finish a fic nobody wants to read anyway.

People in this subthread weren't talking about RPF, but about fictional characters. Suddenly finding out something bad about an actor who plays a character you requested shouldn't be an acceptable reason to opt out of a fandom.

How effusive can one be in the author notes? Is it normal to spaz at the recipient because you two share a fandom/ship?

Totally fine to be enthusiastic, though I agree with the coalies above me that going on at length is a little excessive. :D Something like "I was so excited to match on this fandom and pairing - I'm so thrilled there's somebody else out there who loves it, and I really hope you enjoy this!" seems fine to me, though.

Is it okay to leave a treat unbetaed? Would you be offended receiving unbetaed treats?

Also agreed with the coalies above me - this is okay if you can achieve reasonably error-free SPAG on your own, I think. I personally wouldn't be offended as such to receive a treat that looked blatantly unbetaed; I'd just assume the writer who'd given it to me wasn't very good and leave it at that.

saw "shitty fic just to up fic count" basically and uh is this a thing?

No. Another recent exchange (Trick or Treat) ran a community challenge to try to increase the number of fics given to participants. Some participants who received stories that weren't well-done/didn't match what they felt they'd asked for are attributing that to malice/deliberate lack of care rather than incompetence. It's nice to think that if only that community challenge hadn't happened, all their gifts would have been good! But IMO it's not accurate. Badfic happens. People ignoring requests happens.

No one reasonable is going to assume anything bad about you based on the number of treats you write. This comm regularly has threads collecting the names of people who write a lot of treats so other people can treat them back for their generosity; there's almost never wank about people treating ~just to get on the nice list, which for _coal is sort of amazing.

Focusing on the beta question: No need to have it betaed if you don’t want it to, there’s absolutely no obligation! But there’s also no too short for a beta, so if you want one, you should get one.

Adding All Letters to App

I'm slowly going through the app and adding links to all the letters listed in the prompts -- if you want to go through the prompts you can, but this will also give you the option of just seeing the ones that have letters.

I've currently only done the Theater section, and I don't know how much time I'll have to do other sections, but it's happening.

If the actor and character parallel in squicky ways, it should. I wouldn't want a novel about a serial killer after its author dismembered somebody, either.

Don’t do it, it could be tl;dr or put pressure on the recip. Save it for your reply to their comment.

Get it betaed.

Don’t worry about it.

+1

I understand why exceptions are made for RPF, but "actor turned out to be a massive creep" doesn't seem sufficient reason for the mods to let you change your requests. I'm not saying that it's wrong to be turned off the fandom by that sort of thing - it's unfortunate, but it doesn't warrant mod involvement.

A lot of circumstances beyond their control might turn a recipient - or in fact an author - off a fandom. Plot developments in ongoing fandom. Personal tragedies (if, say, you request/offer a fandom that prominently features characters suffering from cancer and a loved one dies of cancer between sign-ups and reveals, asking for/offering noncon and then becoming victim of sexual violence etc.). An actor dying in a tragic way.

All of that is a good reason not to read your story (as a recip) or to default (as a writer). But it's nothing that should give you a do-over. (Or to be more precise, if you get a do-over for this particular scandal, you also should get a do-over for all those other cases where you can't handle the fandom anymore through no fault of your own.)

Nominations for a baseball player who died suddenly during the nominations period were rejected one year, weren't they? There is precedence for mod intervention there.

Frankly, the personal tragedies you mention should be reasons for the mods to adjust things for you. The idea that morbane et al. would shrug and wring their hands in response to "I was raped and I no longer want to receive rape fic" is pretty awful.

Yeah, as my Yuletide options dwindle year after year, I'd turned to ToT, hoping that the openness of it would meet my needs. But it's just not that great? Or maybe it's just not that great this year?

But I certainly don't feel like I'm finding good things to read nor do I feel like being in the exchange is getting my work any more exposure than it would have otherwise. In fact, it might even be missing out on exposure, because of how long it was unrevealed. I posted a day or so before Halloween, and even if I re-dated for the day the exchange opened, it's still buried.

Re: Trick or treat works revealed

(Anonymous) 2017-11-04 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds like your fandoms were a bad match this year, which certainly happens.

Re: redating: I'd suggest redating to the day of reveals on the day of reveals in the future. If you're posting in an active fandom, there's really no other way to avoid getting buried.

Re: I don't think you know what that word means

(Anonymous) 2017-11-04 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, but the word platonic originally referred to a romantic relationship in which the very present sexual feelings were deliberately not acted upon and was applied exclusively to homoromantic relationships, so technically everyone is using it wrong.

Also Merrian Webster defines it as: "of, relating to, or being a relationship marked by the absence of romance or sex"

Re: THIS IS MADNESS

(Anonymous) 2017-11-04 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone who was recently diagnosed with a chronic illness, I would be mortified. Personally, I don’t want to read fanfic about my illness because I am living that shit. And I especially wouldn’t want to read it if I hadn’t requested that. Nor would I want it public knowledge that I’m sick.

It’s fine if someone specifically requests it, because it’s their way of coping. But NOT FINE AT ALL otherwise. I don’t think any of my friends would do that to me, but holy shit...

Betas of yuletide

What's the best way to get good feedback? What do you like your beta-ees to ask for or give you?

Aaaaand any recommendations for known good betas? Not canon specific, but good crit or soundboarding.

Re: Ask Coal

False. I've seen comments saying to that affect for people who treat alot. I think it's stupid because writing takes work and I'd rather eat a real brownie than get brownie points.

Re: Trick or treat works revealed

(Anonymous) 2017-11-04 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
There are plenty of fandoms I like in ToT this year, it's just none of the fic in them is very good, imo.

AYRT

That's why I said it's less of a blanket assumption with Yuletide. It might still be something people who post 50 drabbles have to deal with, or people who regularly toss out a ton of treats that turn out to be kittyfic, but if you post a couple of treats, chances are no one's going to notice, much less give you grief over it.
