ha. One of the reasons that letter left me cringing so much was the pseudo-forensic psychology they had going on.

a) Your friend wrote an incredibly wanky letter. Being the "experienced member of fandom" they state they are, surely they must have been able to predict how wanky that letter would be. You can write a letter asking for torture porn and not apologizing for it without being such an incredible wank magnet.

b) If you don't want to ruin your Yuletide experience I'd suggest getting off coal. Coal's not a monolith, and not everyone here said bad things about your friend, but now that you're participating in the thread under your account name, trolls are going to keep trolling you if they can get a rise out of you. Even if they don't mean what they say they'll talk shit just to upset you. If you're into that, cool, but really, you should probably let it go. (It will also just keep the spotlight on you and your friend for much longer.)

Look, you care about your friend, right? Showing up here to defend her is really not going to help, unfortunately, it's usually the worst thing you can do - you want to see evidence of this, check fandom_wank and see how it's always gone down. I get the desire to defend a friend, I really do, but she posted a letter that

a) started with a long rant about how much better Yuletide and fandom were back in the day before people started giving a shit about politics and -isms
b) segued into a rant about politics being terrible that then detailed how she actually does love certain politics (including the fact that she apparently glorifies Actual Racist And All-Around Terrible Human Extrordinaire Charlton Heston)
c) was totally defensive about things that wouldn't have needed defending if she hadn't gone ott with defending them in the first place (no one cares that you want vore for Christmas, you don't need to invoke your right to free speech to ask for it)
d) was just aggressive and condescending as hell

There's exactly one person in this thread who's crossed the line in talking about her. It's shitty to attack someone over their appearance and I wish they hadn't gone there. But that is one person, and that's the only truly awful thing anyone's said about her. The rest of us are boggling over the fact that someone would write such a rude, weird letter and post it for all the world to see.
