For me it depends. If it's a long series and you're halfway through, that's more likely to give me enough to work with than if the canon is short or if you've barely made a chip in it.

Also, I pretty much expect it with most comic fandoms. Most people will have read all of the series they've nominated, but may or may not know about any canon that's affected the characters since or outside of that series.
