RL people are affected by all kinds of awful events. I remember that person walking into an exchange post on FFA a couple of weeks back arguing that noncon shouldn't be allowed in the exchange because they were a rape survivor

I would be astounded, and also deeply horrified, if the mods of any exchange allowed one participant to nominate another participant's real-life rapist in an RPF category. That is a completely different level of "not on" from writing rape/noncon other participants may have to scroll past.

I absolutely remember furors arising about stories that placed the killing fields in Cambodia in the backdrop of a love story, or used the Pulse shooting as a setting (not for Yuletide, but). I don't see what's so unreasonable or inexplicable about drawing a line between awful events in general (rape, murder, natural disaster) and specific RL tragedies/horrors. And yeah, it does get a little more complicated when you've got fictional portrayals of real people, but the mods saying "that's enough degrees of separation from reality and RPF isn't" is fine; they're the mods, they get to decide.
