I'm getting annoyed at the writers who use googledocs to post their letters since I'm now listed as "sharing" them on my drive.

I don't they see anything about you making a copy or accessing it but yeah it's annoying.

This is going to sound really pedantic, but I hate that analogy about how you should be polite about your gift from your writer just like how you’d be polite about your gift from your grandmother. I get the point, that you should always be polite about your gift online and IRL, but your grandma getting you a gift out of thoughtfulness and generosity is way different than getting a gift via mutual exchange based on prior agreement like in Yuletide. It’s not the same thing at all.

The other difference is that it's likely your grandmother will give you a gift in the future and it might be useful to tell her if your gift is wildly inappropriate to your likes and interests. Your assigned writer will probably never write for you again.

Your assigned writer will probably never write for you again.

Unless you overlap in the right fandoms and get assigned each other again and again and again.

ayrt

I have had repeated authors and people I've been assigned to more than once, but I still think this is true for most yuletide participants, many of whom don't sign up for any other exchanges.

At Christmas, everyone over 18 in my family picks names out of a hat for the next year. There's less thoughtfulness and generosity and more "here next year's gift assignment!" And if you get that second cousin you only see on holidays, you probably get them a gift card. It's really not that different.

Family set-ups really vary and this comparison only works for some. For instance, I expect my step-grandma to give me something out of a list I've sent her for this purpose, whereas I don't expect my writer to necessarily write something for my prompts.

+0.5

I'm not close with my family so it's really just obligational gift giving, even more so than yuletide is honestly, but the analogy is still broken with some people.
