I mean, you do you and all, but if I were intimidated by my recipient I'd try to focus on writing the best possible fic in the fandom I already know and not spend 20+ hours just trying to get into something that I'm not even familiar with already.

I wouldn't pick up a whole new canon, but I understand the impulse of writing more than one fic. You might be the author of both, but it does have the psychological effect of spreading the expectations a bit.

While it wasn't 20+ hours in my case, I've picked up a canon to write an extra gift for a recipient who intimidated me before, and I have to say, I'm glad I did - they liked both fics a lot and were extra delighted when they realized the same person had written them. Unless the AYRT's schedule is seriously punishing between now and December, they've got more than enough time to pick up a canon that length and still write a solidly excellent fic for the canon they already know.
