The Dirty Energy Source

Do you want to make a spreadsheet about spreadsheets?
Do you still need to figure out what two other fandoms you should request beside the only one you really want fic for?
Or are you trolling ALL the letter posts for placeholders, just so you can write those people some nice, dry coal?

We want to know all about it.

since you're not requesting it, name names on the fandom.

i got mine right last year but i have two big-for-yuletide fandoms on offer so i don't think i can predict this time around.

NA

I didn't think it was that bad. I'm not offering the fandom because I'm paranoid that I'll be matched to someone who doesn't realize who the narrator and his friend are (I've known more than one person who was confused on that point), but I'd bookmarked that letter for potential treat-writing.

She seems truly interested in the vigilantism, the theater troupe, the potential for covert rebellion to turn into revolution...all fascinating and unique elements of the story's peculiar setting. Also, I was gratified to see that I'm not the only person who thinks a Great Mouse Detective/Study in Emerald fusion could be brilliant.

Making it so that you can't request specific individuals in #Yuletide RPF probably has something to do with last year when two coalies socked up to request porn about the mods.

Would you rather: give or receive edition

(Anonymous) 2014-10-21 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
We all want both but in this thread you can only choose one. What would you rather have: give the best Yuletide fic ever to your recipient that the recipient adores to pieces and gives you kudos and comments for days and recced to high heaven

or receive the best Yuletide fic ever from your recipient that you adore to pieces and other people leaves kudos and comments for days and rec to high heaven?

Do you know who she's offering? Can you change your requested characters to minimize the chance of matching with her?

Give, definitely give.

I had a pretty good guess at who I'd match with last year and turned out to be right! Worked out pretty well in the end.

This year I'm much less sure, but I'm also not done finalizing my offers; I might remove one that I'm currently offering and I'm hoping to see letters for certain other fandoms before deciding to offer them.

Fuck it I'm doing it

She's the kind of person to check off 'any'.
And to the previous reply, I can't name the fandom because she may be here on coal.

Receiving a Yuletide-winning fic is awesome, but once I've read it, I have to leave it for a while before I can reread it.

Writing a Yuletide-winning fic means that I can start every day for the next month or longer by reading kudos notifications and comments about what a good writer I am. It's like the gift that keeps on giving.

So I pick Give, but obviously what I really want is both.

Sweet Summer Coalie, you're not helping your attempts to sound unpretentious by strawmanning that anyone said that everything they read sounds the same to them. Yuletide letters sound similar because they all follow a similar format and often express the same feelings. People in _coal and at FFA are constantly citing examples of boilerplate yuletide language (Thank you for offering one of my rare fandoms! I know I'm going to enjoy whatever you come up with!) and polite comment language (Thank you so much for writing this for me!). Letters are rife with these, that doesn't mean Yuletide is rife with plagiarism.

Above and beyond that detail, perhaps the reason people reacted badly and interpreted your original comment as though you thought you were unique, is because you thought that a person who has similar likes and interests to you must be copying you. People enter Yuletide for a variety of reasons, but one of the main ones is to get a fic in a small fandom tailored to their interests. It would go against this entire notion for a person to steal another person's request. This person is not entering Yuletide for your benefit, they are entering because they want a fic they would enjoy. Just because that seems similar to a fic you like does not mean you are being copied.

Give; everyone remembers the authors, never the recips.
