The Dirty Energy Source

Do you want to make a spreadsheet about spreadsheets?
Do you still need to figure out what two other fandoms you should request beside the only one you really want fic for?
Or are you trolling ALL the letter posts for placeholders, just so you can write those people some nice, dry coal?

We want to know all about it.

nayrt

Matching would collapse completely?

Seven Souls in the Skull Castle! Kind of obscure Japanese movie, but you can get it on DVD in the States now. It's actually really fabulous overall. Historical, set about eight years after Oda Nobunaga died, with multiple excellent female characters and outrageous enough that you can just about break a rib laughing. But there's also a moment where the villain kisses another guy...and then you realize the purpose of the kiss was to spit drugged blood into the other guy's mouth and send him BUGFUCK CRAZY. It's amazingly slashy and oh so wrong.

I really just recommend the movie overall. It has a couple of great het ships, an utterly hilarious pair of brothers, fun action, and did I mention it was outrageous? More people need to watch this, stat!

& I guess likewise Kel in Protector of the Small, who's very tall and strong and frequently told she doesn't have the right look to get a husband.

Would it though? Most people offer more than the minimum number of fandoms now from what I can see. Only a small number of people would take the option of offering only one fandom. Make it known that if you offer less than 3 fandoms and you don't have anyone requesting what you're offering then too bad, so sad - try again next year.

Requests: Characters (2-x).

I think they tried something like that the first year that signups were on AO3 (which was... 2010?). I think we were allowed to use the optional tags box that year as well, to put stuff like "angst" or "humor" or "slash" that it would try to match on. But it either didn't help matching or was too much work for the algorithm, because that was the only time they did it.

I remember that! Did anyone ever find out what was up with it? It seems weird to fill out all the headers and tags and things just to disappear completely.

Most people here at coal and/or enthusiastic early letter writers offer more than minimum. I guarantee a lot would drop to one or two. I'd be one of them.

Graceland S2 has an undercover male FBI agent seducing the self-hating lieutenant of a drug cartel who has internalized homophobia. There's canon kissing, voyeurism, and gunplay.

Both.

Saving your darkest prompts for the crueltide post is a perfectly cromulent idea.

Well, I've changed the cut-type anyway - too simple a fix not to, really - but it's good to know that the post wasn't awful-wrong without it.

Thanks!

I don't re-offer fandoms I've written for previous Yuletides.

I'd probably drop to two or three and my sock would definitely drop to one. I'm at six now on my main account only because I have two I actually want to offer and four more I couldn't choose between so I offered all four.

Re: Change One Thing

(Anonymous) 2014-10-23 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
Right now people *have* to offer multiple fandoms, so they're primed to look through the tagset for multiple things they'd be excited to write. If you can get away with offering just one, then I guarantee you a bunch of people will instead be primed to figure out what fandom they want to write the most, and offer only that.

Booting the people who offer too few and can't be matched would turn matching into a flaming trainwreck. People would offer stuff that *has* been requested--but that doesn't guarantee good matching results, since a lot of them might only have a few possible recips, which are the same few possible recips other single-fandom people offered. Hey presto, five hundred instant pinch hits!

Yeah, no. Not gonna happen. I seriously don't get the people who see how things work right now and assume they work that way because of natural law or something, rather than because of the current rules. Take away the rules, and the scene will change real damn fast.

Depends on the fandom. I was an Ao3 supremacist and then I decided to try LOTR fandom over there D: D: D: Not a mistake I'll make again. Yes there's a bunch of crap over at the pit that takes forever to sort through, but at least there actually is good LOTR fic. Now I decide fandom by fandom.

That one was so bizarre, and it just got weirder to me. I clicked around in their profile because I couldn't imagine actually leaving the story up like that if it had somehow been me, and wanted some evidence the author wasn't dead in a ditch or something. They bookmarked something in June, so, they've been around and using AO3 but haven't deleted or fixed their one word story. I don't understand!

5-Minute Fandoms

(Anonymous) 2014-10-23 07:40 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes people put up a list of the really small fandoms (a single panel comic, a painting, one music video or song) and I like to put one of these in my requests. Has anyone done this, or does anyone want to promote one here?

Re: fandom-specific pseuds

(Anonymous) 2014-10-23 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
No, this happens to a lot of people who first pick their username in one fandom then branch out. There's lots of people with Harry Potter usernames that don't have anything to do with HP anymore, for example.

Re: Change One Thing

(Anonymous) 2014-10-23 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah you're not wrong. I've been reliably informed by friends who read there that for some fandoms it does work. It's just never ever been one of mine. And boy, crunching numbers for YT this year... I think maybe four fics out of two hundred were actually about the characters instead of OCs. It was actually worse than I remembered.

It's a multifandom exchange and that's the point?

(Anonymous) 2014-10-23 08:20 am (UTC)(link)
I used to donate around 150 bucks a year. This year I just read about the retreat minutes before I was to donate. I never heard of the first.
So yeah, I'm not going to donate anymore, as they seem to have gone well beyond 'we need every penny you can spare to keep the servers running'.

Re: whining

My heretofore fandom of one got new canon - which I loathe with a passion - so I decided not to even think about nominating it. I'm sure you can see where this is going, oodles of requests and offers for new canon. I have a hiss-boo reaction anytime I come across it on the summary.
