The Dirty Energy Source

Do you want to make a spreadsheet about spreadsheets?
Do you still need to figure out what two other fandoms you should request beside the only one you really want fic for?
Or are you trolling ALL the letter posts for placeholders, just so you can write those people some nice, dry coal?

We want to know all about it.

God, that pisses me off SO much.

What a fucking disgusting liar. And that whole "didn't know it was frowned upon" bullshit--give me a break, anyone would realize that!

I already posted my letter, but I'm still wondering if I should rephrase the part where I say that I don't want to read about one of fandom's favorites despite liking them (they're okay, just not very interesting to me).

I will join the other nonnies in pretending you're talking about my letter. Because my letter is great.

da

I don't think a list of prompts is an essay, though. If someone writes 10 prompts, that easily gets to 1k without being one big essay.

And now you've all got me worrying that mine is too short, at around 1000 words.

one of the 4k letter writers here

1k is fine! As long as you're happy with your prompts, that's all that matters.

[Zoidberg voice] If you wanted to leave some super specific prompts, however, I wouldn't say no...

It's always been done that way for every single exchange.

It's so if the letter gets taken down or changed or whatever, you can still see the actual comment containing their ao3 name, their fandoms (and characters if they put them), and the link to the letter, may it possibly be RIP.

Re: good point

(Anonymous) 2014-10-18 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. The way they're doing it is the long way around, especially if people edit their fandoms.

Hmm. I guess the word "competent" has more definitions than I'd realized.

I've spotted two SCP requests so far.

http://themistoklis.dreamwidth.org/53921.html
SCP in question is a groundhog's day type basketball game that as it repeats gets totally out of hand, so maybe just a little scary.

http://debirlfan.livejournal.com/7675.html
References three different SCPs, all of which are pretty tame.

Huh?

Re: good point

(Anonymous) 2014-10-18 02:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Not sure what good that does. If someone edits their letter, they also might edit their entry in the letters post. If they take their letter down, it was probably a wankstorm that someone screen captured anyhow.

na

it's good because everything points to the same place. you can verify that someone willingly commented and listed their fandoms on the actual post. no sneaking in friends, etc. or "missing" people who you don't like. it's an index of all the comments posted on the post, not all the letters across lj/dw.

like ayrt said, a big part of it is that that's always how thing have been done so going against the grain could be seen as incompetence.

Re: `````````

From the OP's link: I am curious why the spreadsheet points to the person's post in this thread, rather than linking directly to their letter? It seems as if linking directly to the letter (where ever it might be posted) would be more efficient?

The commenter is right, it's rather silly to link back to the LJ post instead of directly to the letter. Not what I'd expect from a competent, experienced spreadsheeter.

Just discovered an ex is involved in one of the fandoms I was going to request. Can't decide whether it would be worse to get a fic from her and have to make nice, or dump the request and have to find something else to fill the slot. /o\

The spreadsheet is such a mess

(Anonymous) 2014-10-18 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
So much for the 'official' team being the experts. The 'alphabetical by fandom' list is repeating requests, I assume because they're automatically pulling data from the main sheet and the original letters sheet. Also a bunch of the letters aren't even links so you can't click to get to them, which means you have to copy the text out of the formula line.

They should have just integrated the first 85 letters as page zero. At least that might fix the duplication problem.

I'd say keep the request, personally. She's the one who'll have to deal with the awkwardness. If it's too weird, she'll default, and if not, you have the anonymous period before author reveals to read the fic and comment on it before you actually find out it's her. It seems like something your ex should be worrying about, not you!

Oh, I see, the unclickable links are from the first spreadsheet. Making it harder to see those letters is fitting punishment for those of us audacious enough to use the 'unofficial unofficial' post, I suppose.

Sinbad! There's more than four characters in the tagset, somebody besides me is interested - right?

Re: good point

(Anonymous) 2014-10-18 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

On my own, I link to the comment in the letters post instead of directly to the letter because I feel like half the time, the letter itself doesn't have the person's AO3 username or sometimes even the fandoms. Then I have to hunt down the information all over again in the letters post.

Re: good point

(Anonymous) 2014-10-18 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"going against the grain could be seen as incompetence"

Given everything that's happened with the letters post and spreadsheet this year, you think that changing to link the letters directly would be the thing seen as incompetence?

Re: The spreadsheet is such a mess

(Anonymous) 2014-10-18 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
It's so weird. I put my letter on both posts and some of my fandoms are in the alphabetical list as duplicates and others aren't?
