At a guess? To make sure the author didn't write in that fandom again. It's one thing to concrit when the author asks for it. But to comment like that on a gift exchange? Not cool at all.

And this I don't understand. If you don't care for author X's interpretation of canon or writing style or whatever, don't read them again. It's as simple as that.

Oh my God you guys are sensitive. I can't speak for anyone else, but I personally only leave constructive crit when I hope to read more of the author's fic in the future. If they just plain suck I don't bother.

I'm all for constructive criticism. I've been ripped to shreds by the best; it gave me a thicker skin and made me a better writer. However, I asked for shredding. Usually a person in a gift exchange does not.

If it had been the recip who left that comment I would've been right there with you, but it was some random person who might not even have realised that it was a part of an exchange (no AO3 account). And as far as criticism goes it was hardly shredding, the general tone of the comment was positive.

Agreed, it's not brutal, but IME people participating in a gift exchange rarely expect anything but thanks.

Like I said, I have a fairly thick skin, but still remember a comment on my first story that went something like, "I enjoyed this. It wasn't nearly as cheesy as I thought it would be." To be fair, there was a definite cheese factor, but the comment still stung (and has obviously stayed with me all these years).

If the person with the concrit really had to say something, it would have been better if the comment was made in private. If I feel the urge to criticize, I do so via email and include the offer to beta their next story.

NA I think it's not positive, I think it's highly patronising.

And I think it's fine as far as constructive criticism goes, and wouldn't mind receiving a comment like that. See how what we think doesn't matter?
