Outlines are your friend. Write down all the details you brainstorm about case specifics and who's involved. It doesn't have to be a bullet point outline (though it can be!) I find it more helpful to just summarize the story in paragraph format, adding details and bits of dialogue as I come up with them. It will help you keep everything in order as you're writing, and help you move forward if you get stuck.
