Thinking about it more, I guess I can see it as poly. I think sometimes I look at my situation of over two decades with my partners in a triad as such a norm that I forget about the V and other configurations. I generally don't consume poly fanworks, either, so I don't know the trends.
v is the most common thing in media, isn't it? A and B both like C, compete for C's love. it usually ends with one person having to step away and not ending in a V relationship, of course, but V is insanely common in media and fanfic at least for 3/4 of the story.
i think V endings are more common than equalteral triangles but I haven't read the fic in every single fandom to say that with surety.
Except that "A and B both like C, compete for C's love" is only one of the ways you can get a poly V relationship, and I feel like the "rival suitors" trope comes from a pretty different place from poly tropes.
Poly Vs can come about that way, but they can also be written as "A/B, but B falls in love with C too" or "attempted triad A/B/C resettles with one relationship as less involved".
I don't see the whole rival suitors as poly at all even if the person is in a relationship with both of them at some point because the end game is always going to be just two people.

(Agreed though if you say you want a triad and get a V, that's unsatisfying.)
