1000 words isn't that long to do character growth, plotty case fic with added romance or many of the other suggestions made for both gen and ship fics, a brief look at part of a character's personality, or a snapshot of ship/friendship/family would be much better than a half-assed OOC attempt at either ship or gen.

Yes, I get that (my exchange fics generally end up in the 3-4k range) but the way AIRT phrased it implied to me that they consider Yuletide an outlier in being 1k. Which just isn't the case, especially since most other exchanges copy a lot of YT's rules. Unless they mostly participate in Big Bangs, I guess, but I wouldn't really call those exchanges.
