Received a fic where nothing interesting happened. No character study, no plot, just generic 'and then they sat around and talked about the weather'. I was... underwhelmed.

But I wouldn't call it coal, just... maybe a scratchy lumpy sweater. ;)

One of the fandoms I'll be requesting this year is very new to me. I first discovered it a couple of days into nominations, and fell really hard for it. I've finished writing up the section for it on my letter and I'm really excited... maybe too excited. I couldn't stop myself from starting to work on a fic, using some of the prompts I gave in my letter.

If I do finish it, I'd like to post it. It would be the first fic for this particular fandom, so if my assigned writer is matched to it and goes looking, they'll see my story. Even if they just check my AO3 they'll see it, as I'm not very prolific (so it'd be right at the top of my recent works list).

The prompts in question aren't extremely detailed; it's more vague ideas, mentioning themes I'd be curious about, kinks I'd like to see in a sex scene, etc. Like, hm, say "I think this character had a rough childhood, I would be interested in seeing him opening up about that!" or "I'm under the impression that she never had a real boyfriend before, so how would she react when she realizes the man she's fallen for is very experienced in bed?"

What do you guys think? Is this okay? Would it turn you off completely if you were matched to me? I thought of simply sitting on the fic and posting it after Yuletide, but I don't think that's a good idea either. For one, knowing myself, I'll edit it to pieces and then end up deleting it in frustration. And secondly, I think that might be even worse for the assigned writer, like, you write a gift for someone and then they go and write one themselves with possibly the same ideas/plot -- like the one you gave just wasn't good enough for them.

I realize the obvious answer here might be to change my letter and come up with other prompts, but... That's what I want, dammit! It doesn't matter if I've written it myself or not, I still want those things and would be over the moon to receive a gift containing any of them.

Ugh, this fic. Or lack of fic, in my case. My recip has tons of prompts and they're all interesting and I have four or five ideas floating around my head, all of which would be at least 5k to pull off decently.

After starting on my first idea I went ahead and outlined it to try to give myself some direction, and it would end up being at least 20k if I wrote it. So it's back to the drawing board, because I don't have time to write a 20k fic for this exchange, and also I don't really want to be that person.

I defaulted last year because while the prompts themselves were fine I recognized the name of my assigned recip as a (low level) wanker from elsewhere and couldn't summon any enthusiasm to write for them. Waited until my own gift was posted, dropped the hot rock. No regrets.

Wrote for a recipient's second fandom rather than the one we matched on because they requested 3 characters but basically requested A/B in a crazy space AU and C in a completely unrelated canon plotline and I couldn't figure out how to get all 3 in one fic together without it being really forced cameos and didn't want the headache. Could have gone ODAO but it would have felt wrong.

Still not sure of the quality of the finished fic, but I liked the prompt for that one and had the best go I could without "I've got to include these 3 characters together somehow?" headaches.

I know there is some color (an orange or green, I think) that a lot of people think is a completely different color (maybe a red?), if they only ever hear the name, but I can't for the life of me remember that color's name -- or the actual details, obviously. I just think it was something I might have seen on a buzzfeed quiz once. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

In the fandom I requested, I gave prompts for a slash pairing, a femslash pairing, a het pairing, and several gen outs.

I'd mentioned homophobia as a DNW, and I made a point of specifically mentioning for this canon (where homophobia was a thing) that I really preferred for homophobia just not to be a thing.

The fic I got was one guy struggling with his internalized homophobia and feelings for the other guy, and eventually deciding to keep his feelings bottled up forever.

I was pissed. The writer was also an empty sock, so there wasn't even someone for me to hold a grudge against.

Zero characters fandoms

Probably a clueless noob question, but I searched the FAQ and couldn't see the answer - what does it mean when a fandom is nominated with no characters? How does it work for offering/requesting - you can go with any character? Only world-building? I feel like I should know, or at least know how to find out, but - help a girl out, Coal?

You can't request a story for specific characters, only world building. I guess you could mention in your letter some characters you'd like to see included in a world building piece but your writer is in no way obligated to do so, ODAO etc.
