Opinions on quoting a segment of dialogue directly from canon? I wound up doing backstory fic, and the obvious end scene is partially in the canon. I would, of course, modify the rest of the scene, but is it okay to use the 50 words of dialogue?
I finally got started writing this evening, I'm about 600 words in and I'm still in the very beginning of the fic. The OTP haven't even met yet, what the fuck am I doing?
See also: assignment? what assignment? (I'll start it tonight.)
One of these is barely over a 1,000 because it's a weird little piece, so I'm absolutely waiting for the last possible moment to upload it so there's no chance of the person getting it as their main gift. The other two are around 8,000 and 3,500 words--not longfic, but not bad.
You know how it is...you get 2/3 of the way through a fic, and it's goin' smooth, and then for some reason it's that last 1/3 that's the hardest to write.
Basically, I've written all the good bits I wanted to write, and now I have to figure out how to write about ~3k of not-fun bits to make it cohesive. Anyone got any tips on how to stay motivated and get through this?
Re: if writing's a marathon i just too a face-first dive into the gravel
I had to do that with a 14,000 worder once. I eventually just took my laptop to my fav cafe and forced myself to write until closing time on as many evenings as I could. Since there was nothing else to do (I deliberately did NOT find out the WIFI password) I would get so much more done. Helped that I paid for tea, so I felt obligated to make the money worth it.
Also used the library for this purpose. No tea, but better if you're on a tight budget.
Word Sprint! Right now! Me vs. Me and anyone else who wants to
YO I need to write and stop driving myself up the wall with inaction. Here I go! I'm writing now! I will update with wordcounts periodically. Feel free to join if you like.
I don't know if there needs to be a time limit, but if there does... 90 minutes from right now. And... GO
Re: Word Sprint! Right now! Me vs. Me and anyone else who wants to
Today I am writing, coal! I took myself to a coffee shop near my apartment with my laptop and have been writing for the last 1.5 hours.
As of now, I have 1408 words! I think this is going to work out to be a five scene story. I have two scenes fully written, two started, and then a final scene that I haven't started at all. It'll likely wind up somewhere around the 2000-2500 word mark.
I'm going to be here for a little while longer if anyone else is writing and wants encouragement! :)
Today I'm going to send something off to beta, and work on a roleplay project offsite. If I'm really feeling ambitious I'll work on a treat for Star Wars rarepairs, maybe. (I didn't sign up for that so I could focus on more Yuletide treating, haha.)
I'm writing a fic involving a video game character whose name is picked off a list by the player - e.g. you can name them John, Dave, Rose, or Jade, but only those. There is no canon-est choice - they also have a descriptive name (e.g. The Train Driver), and that's what all the official stuff calls them. I also requested this character, and mentioned my preferred name for them in my letter. The fic has moved in a direction where I think it would be best to use their real name. Can I use my preferred name, or should I pick the first one on the list, or what?
If your recip has a specific preference listed in your letter, go with that.
If there's no specific preference, do what you want.
(If you're feeling extra generous you can al do research on their bookmarks to see if there's a preference....buuut I'm of the opinion that if it matters so much to them they should put it in Optional Details or the Dear Author letter.)
Anyone want to join me for a word sprint? I'm going to write for the next hour. It's all tricksy dialogue in my fic ATM! I'll post my progress below. Please feel free to join me. I am Midnight Oil in the writing postsm though it's been a while since I've commented. C:
I'm starting with 1,125 words. Let's see if I can make it to 2k!!
A) That sounds amazing, and B) remember, it doesn't have to be perfect by the deadline, just posted! You can always add scenes and make edits afterward, if you need to.
Finished one fic last weekend, and I've been working away on another during the week. So if I can finish #2 and start (or even also finish???) #3, that would be excellent.
