Apparently shayheyred did get a note from the mods: http://shayheyred.livejournal.com/336039.html

For posterity:

For Yuletide, I wrote one pinch hit, because I'd missed the deadline for signups ::facepalm::
I got "Darker than BLACK," a very strange but compelling anime, of which I'm very fond. The result may be found here: The Sky Full of Stars, which will probably make more sense to people who have seen the anime. In brief, there are people called "Contractors" who do the dirty work (assassinations) for various syndicates. They have special powers. The main character is Hei, who has the cover name Li Shenshung... Oh, never mind - it probably won't make sense anyway! But read it if you'd like to, and definitely seek out the anime.

This year, for the first time, I had a displeased recipient. And while at first I thought she was just being a pain, I went back only to discover that I'd totally missed one of her "Do Not Wants" in her letter and had made it the subject of the piece. ::more facepalming:: I rewrote part of the fic to fix it, and to her credit, she sent me a lovely note thanking me. Clearly I have to read the fine print better next time.

Unfortunately, somebody (not the recip) complained to the Yuletide mods, who sent me a "please don't do this anymore" note. I won't, trust me. However, the complainant said to them that I had still implied the original ending in the newly written story -- which is patently false. So someone out there is stirring the pot for some reason. At this point I stand with the story, thank the recipient and am moving on. In general, though, I enjoyed writing this story, and it renewed my interest in the fandom, which is always good news.

Hope your new year is bright, healthy, happy and prosperous!

Whoever called it that the falling star end was for plausible deniability over canon character death, knowing that the mods don't do anime, seems to have been right on.

The mods are stupid.

MORBANE I KNOW YOU COME HERE. FALLING STAR IN DARKER THAN BLACK EQUALS DEATH. DEATH DEATH DEATH.

I doubt she cares. As far as the mods are concerned it's all done and dusted, whether the fic still contains that DNW or not.

I don't think that's fair. Queen Bitch has already made it clear she didn't really give a fuck about the note she got.

The recipient's first comment said, not rudely, that it included a DNW. So Shayheyred's first assumption is that the recip is lying to her? Lovely person.

Nice how she completely forgets to include the part where she posts a public entry about how the recipient is "bitchy" and "graceless". Also, "patently false" -- how, exactly? It's pretty damn obvious to anyone who's seen the anime. And how the fuck is a DNW list considered "fine print"?!

She's not only a complete asshole, but an idiot as well. As evidence by the fact that she missed the deadline for signing up.

Coalie, you and I both know the mods give as much of a shit about anime as they do about comics. Those are the ones she's trying to convince.

Classic asshole tactic: frantically hide the evidence of you being an asshole and then pretend you're perfectly nice and reasonable.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-02 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Cue the "why the fuck you lying?" guy.

They're acting like they were grumping about the comment only until they realized the DNW mistake, but that's not true. They complained about their recipient being a pain after they figured out they wrote the DNW...because the "bitchy" comment they were complaining about mentioned it, and they mentioned having rewrote the story in the original post!

And they're being outright shifty about the fact that the death is still absolutely implied.

They're trying to cover their ass now and make it look like a mistake because the mods contacted them, but the truth is they were just an unapologetic jerk about the whole situation. I'll be avoiding them in future Yuletides.

You know, the hilarious thing is how thoroughly she did this to herself. This would have happened to her in every single mod regime Yuletide's had.

And it's not the writing of the DNW. The mods frequently give no shits at all about story content matching the recipient's wishes, as has been proven again.

It's that she violated Cult of Nice. Note that the mods had to be aware of the situation with the DNW before this, but they didn't go after her until that public post shitting on her recipient. If she'd kept mum and polite she'd have gotten away with it, but she had to publicly play the martyr.

I just don't believe this is true. The mods as mods aren't aware of anything until it's formally communicated to them, whether by the recip or by a "concerned citizen".

The fact Morbane goes here isn't relevant. She isn't here in her official capacity, and most of us wouldn't want her to be. It would be utterly antithetical to the purpose of the comm (ie free wheeling critique) if we all thought every single development was being reported back to the mods for compilation in some kind of naughty and nice spreadsheet.

If something's worth reporting, report it. If you just want to bitch about it, bitch away. But don't mistake one for the other.

I was being complimentary by assuming the mods knew their heads from their asses and would be aware of potential obvious landmines that were getting a lot of play on the communities I'd be keeping my eye on to try and catch shit before it went nuclear, but if you want to insist they're incompetent and blinkered, by all means.

I'm amused by how that brought all the Mod Defense Squad coalies out to ferociously argue a point that wasn't even made. You do know mods can--and should--be aware of things even before the Official Action Required level, right?

But yuletide has almost two thousand participants. That is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too many to be checking up on individually, and if they did, I would feel kind of uncomfortable about it, too. The mod team has a responsibility to put in rules they can enforce, and enforce them when they're alerted. Not stalk a complaining anon meme for possible leads.

So you're saying mods should ignore what is blatantly there because they weren't told about it in an official capacity even though they saw it stated here? It's one thing if we knew Morbane wasn't here, plausible deniability, but we know she's here. She anonfailed just last night on a thread about this.

Besides which, Morbane certainly uses her position in the chat to tell people to default. Don't tell me that's not official enough. It's one thing if trialia or some no named person in chat told someone maybe they'd feel better if they defaulted. It's another if it's a mod like Morbane.

That's actually exactly what I'm saying. My opinion is that mods have no business acting on smack talk on anon comms. Take it to name space or suck it up.

I don't have an opinion on chat. Never been there, don't know the culture.

If the DNW was only in the recip's letter, then technically writing it wasn't against the rules (just a massively douchey application of ODAO), so there wasn't a reason for the mods to wade in until she posted criticising her recip.
