Dumb Dental-School Questions: How to Post Letters?

So on the subject of letters... I have a dentist joining Yuletide for the first time this year. Right now, all she has to her name is an email address and a brand new AO3 account -- no LJ/DW account or anything similar. Where should her letter be posted? A fresh new DW account, AO3, Google Docs? Does it really matter, as long as a letter goes up?

Any other advice for the new dentist would be appreciated; I've already had some help from _coal, which reinforced my plan to have the dentist "do Yuletide" as completely as anyone else (writing detailed prompts/a letter, commenting, writing treats, and so on). I'm sorry if this is dumb, but I'm weirdly nervous about this!

I had baby socks last year. :) I'd say DW or LJ is probably the best place to put a letter. Google Docs screams sock to me, and Tumblr would if I checked it out and saw it only had that one post. Whereas people DO make brand new LJ/DW accounts just to participate in Yuletide.

Other than that - I'm paranoid, so I make sure my IPs don't match on posts on the comm.

I really want fic for one specific fandom

This year I really, desperately want fic for one specific fandom. There are other fandoms I'm okay with requesting and I'd probably still enjoy my gift, but to be honest I would be rather disappointed NOT to get fic for the fandom I want most (especially since the fandom I want most is not the tiniest of tiny fandoms and there will probably be a handful of people offering to write for it).

So my question is: how do I heighten my chances of receiving fic for this particular fandom?

Request super obscure fandoms that don't have any offers for your other two requests, maybe? I've never tried it and it runs the risk of someone seeing a "needy" fandom and offering at the last minute, but I know people do the reverse with offers sometimes.

I'm kind of in the same boat, though. There was a fandom I almost wasn't going to request, because I was kind of embarrassed about it, but then I decided to stop being ridiculous and add it to my letter and I got so excited about one of my prompts for it that now that's all I really want. I mean, personally I would still be happy with the other fandoms, and it isn't obvious (as far as I can tell) that I have a bias, but in my heart of hearts that one prompt for that one fandom is what I REALLY want.

Why does everyone want to post their letter the moment the Letter post is up? I don't really understand the hurry? I thought people just looked through the spreadsheet for letters with their fandoms.

People like to write treats for fandoms they don't necessarily offer, nonnie. Also seeing letters helps to know if there's something you don't want to match with, either because you can't or don't want to write it.

I usually read most of the historical RPF letters on the spreadsheet because I find it informative and fun. I feel a little bad for people who get PHDs in history and basically trick themselves into having fandoms that no one else will share, but the way their love and obsession shines through in their letters is lovely to read (especially when I'm procrastinating something irl).

Does anyone else read letters on the spreadsheet for fandoms they are unfamiliar with?

I sometimes read the general likes/do not likes sections in people's letters for inspiration, but I wouldn't bother to read the fandom specifics for a fandom I don't know.

But I do like to read letters for fandoms where I'm familiar with the canon, but not involved in the fandom. Because it's fun to see what people ship in a show I watched years ago and forgot about, or which aspects of that canon I didn't even think about much people are intrigued with.

In the IRC chat, someone said "bless the person spreadsheeting already" and after some general declarations that the spreadsheeter is a troll, thecolourclear replied, "that spreadsheet is going to ... maybe not disappear, but be inactive once the creator realises how much work it is."

So they're claiming malice because...they're can read minds and somehow instinctively know that nobody but them could possibly keep a spreadsheet going.

Also, hi thecolourclear! You wouldn't be "tak[ing] the wrath of _coal right now" if you hadn't come in assuming bad faith left and right.

The worst part is she's right. No offense to spreadsheet coalie, but spreadsheets are fucking annoying and take a lot of work. People expect you to sort it two different ways and YT letters get updated/changed a lot. They'll need to index all the new letters on the other post and do it quicker than the "offical" spreadsheeters otherwise coalie is redundant.

If coalie onlynplans on doing it for the posts in the sock post, then whats the point? Most everyone will repost on the "official" one. If coalie is doing it to make sure no one is left behind, and one person doesn't comment on the new post, then they have to keep up will the "official" post because people won't think to check their spreadsheet.

Thecolourclear is going to win and that sucks.

So I've been sitting on this NYR for a while now and it's nowhere near finished (8k/maybe 15? I'm a slow writer), and I doubt that I'll get it finished and beta'd by the time NYR closes. Is it bad etiquette to finish it over the YT period and gift it as a treat if the recip doesn't repeat the request? Should I just leave it 'til next year's NYR?

So I've had three fandoms-of-one in mind to request since July.

Recently I fell in love with a fandom that's likely going to be Big For Yuletide. I adore this fandom and the characters I want to request and would be in no way disappointed to receive fic of it as my gift on Christmas morning...but given how obscure my other fandoms are I feel like I'd be ruining my surprise by having one fandom that there will be significantly more offers for than others. If I request this fandom I'll be going through Yuletide 100% expecting to get it.

I'm thinking of getting a dentist (I have two other fandoms in mind to request) but it's also something I'd like to get and write on my main account. Anyone else having a similar dilemma?

I am, nonnie, and I'm going for the big one anyway! There's no point requesting a tiny fandom you only kinda want and then being disappointed that you didn't get fic for your larger fandom. Anyway, plenty of time to change your mind after discussions.
