Hands up if you're totally shocked that the very first, and so far only, hockey letter posted asks for Sidney Crosby as part of a pairing.

They want it focused on Fleury NOT as a background character or as a straight dude. That's rare enough as it is. The letter sounds like they want Ovi/Fleury, which is a crackship and a rarepair.

The self-hating hockey rpfers here are kinda sad.

yeah, if that's the best the anti-hockey people can do, that's kind of sad. I clicked on that letter and thought "wait, that can't be the one they mean." Sid is mentioned in one line as the person's usual preferred pairing - not the only one, either - after three long paragraphs about the rarer player?

Yuletide isn't a pairing exchange at all. It's a rare fandom exchange with rare character limits in some hard to define fandoms, and no fandom that doesn't fit the bill gets in.

Anon has an issue with one quick mention of a popular character as a shipping option. Nobody is trying to sneak popular ship or character-centric fic in yet. I responded in kind.

If you don't care about the five or so BNF teams, yeah. You don't feel a part of the "hockey rpf" fandom at all. I'm in the Panthers and Coyotes fandoms and don't read any fic that doesn't have them because I have no idea what the other teams are like outside the rink.

I know what you mean. I read femslash in SPN and I don't feel like I'm part of Supernatural fandom at all.

This is such a stupid argument though. Small ship community in a single megafandom =/= an individual sports team in a league where other teams are more popular.

It's like not allowing Arrow PRF in because Supernatural RPF is too large. Yes, they're both CW RPF, but they're different fandoms.

I'm confused. I'm not arguing against the current rules. I'm saying that allowing individual teams to be considered fandoms isn't comparable to rare characters or rare pairings from megafandoms being allowed in.

I don't have a problem with the request or think it's that weird (well, personally I would hate getting this assignment if I were offering the fandom, but its general existence doesn't bug me). I'm just amused by this in light of all the predictions about the ineligible juggernaut characters being snuck in at every opportunity. I'm sure as more letters come in for teams that have nothing to do with those characters, that'll change.
