But Hitler is dead. Which is why seeing someone walking down the street, specifically dressed as Hitler with all the attendant particularities of dress, style, grooming, etc., would make many people assume that it is someone dressed as Hitler for some sort of costume do.

You see someone in a MAGA hat. Do you think they're being ironic, or that they are an American Nationalist?

To someone who isn't included in the cishet white male ideal of what an American Citizen, do you think the difference between the hat being ironic or serious is anything but moot when it comes to their concern for their safety?

It's more like, you see someone dressed as Donald Trump, with the spraytan and the paunch and the oversized red tie and the ill-fitting suit. In which case, again, context would play a role in how I'd understand the gesture. It could be someone coming from a Trump rally. It could be a comedian's schtick.

NAYRT

I'd probably try to punch a guy walking around as Trump ngl. Anyone who matters would have a bouncer near him. On the off chance, it's the real Trump being too stupid to stay near security and I have my shot, there's a life goal fulfilled. If it's some vlogger doing a bit, a little jail time for assault is worth it for the catharsis.

Typing this out, I'd do it to the Hitler guy too. In his case I'd say sorry after he explained, but I think this guy would have been glad for me to have done something, so I still don't feel bad.

But it's now becoming increasingly common for people to dress up like Nazis in public again without shame. Which is why seeing someone walking down the street, specifically dressed as Hitler with all the attendant particularities of dress, style, grooming, etc., would make many people assume that he liked Hitler enough to model himself after him instead of it being for some costume.

This brings us back to the original question, though: how many people actually dress like Hitler in an admiring way, rather than a satirical or poorly thought-out humorous one?

Nazis? Undoubtedly.

Hitler himself? That's where I'm not sure.
