The Dirty Energy Source

Do you want to make a spreadsheet about spreadsheets?
Do you still need to figure out what two other fandoms you should request beside the only one you really want fic for?
Or are you trolling ALL the letter posts for placeholders, just so you can write those people some nice, dry coal?

We want to know all about it.

Tag bloat is about slowing down the matching process, not about some mythical maximum number of tags. If you think their complaints are stupid, at least get their argument right.

Mine is still better.

Aw, I'm sorry anon! I wasn't the one to nominate it, but I was really considering requesting Karen and Alex but I backed out of it because I knew I wouldn't be able to come up with any prompts and I feel awkward requesting RPF. I really love the femslash! But I find RPF too awkward.

The comments are gold, though.

People nom things they want to offer because more fandoms are needed for offering than requesting and they want to be able to actually do yuletide.

Fake Mrs Snape, you're really kind of obnoxious.

Re: 5-Minute Fandoms

(Anonymous) 2014-10-23 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I received a treat and wrote in a 5-minute fandom last year and really enjoyed myself. I liked that there wasn't a lot of canon (or fanon) to deal with, and that what I wrote ended up being totally different than the fic I received.

I feel like I used to see the advice "add a 5-minute to your requests to give your author another option if they sour on the fandom you were matched on" a lot more than I have recently and I'm glad because it's really stupid advice. Like everything else, only request it if you really do want to see fic for it. I feel like some people stick those kinds of fandoms into their requests, but then don't have any prompts so I'm wary of offering a lot of 5-min fandoms.

Don't pay too much attention to _coal. Though we've been much better this year compared to last, but a lot of that was because of the new mods.

I agree. I prefer the official unofficial spreadsheet.

Re: To people who nominated the things I want to offer

(Anonymous) 2014-10-23 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I nom things I want to offer because if I only nommed things I wanted to request there might not be enough fandoms I could actually offer, yeah. Sometimes this means many of the fandoms I offer get no requests, but at least one or two of them always do.

It works out sometimes. Usually at least some of the fandoms I nominate intending only to offer them get requests. Last year I got to write a treat for one of those and that was fun.

This is so true. And it sucks that sometimes people have to nominate extra fandoms just to reach the offer minimum - I mean, if you nom a fandom that no one requests just so you can offer it, you end up with less "real" offers anyway. I think that would happen less if request and offer minimums were the same.

I'm the real Mrs. Snape. I have a spreadsheet to prove it.

I agree about that "request a 5-minute fandom as a safety fandom!" advice. It works if you actually really like that 5-minute fandom, but you could also work with something fairly short like a movie.

Re: Change One Thing

give comics fandoms the same qualifying fic limits as everybody else. i don't care if it's 1000 or 750 or 500 or idec it could be 200 (literally all my comics have 20 or fewer fics total, this rule doesn't even affect me except for the principle of the thing), but let it be the same for everybody. also, the character-tag limit, which means that some title characters are excluded from their own damn comics just because some version of those characters also appeared in a fannishly-popular but unrelated comic or movie, is stupid and should be banished henceforth.

Learn to enjoy the process. You may or may not get the fic of your heart; it's a crapshoot whether (A) you get matched with a good writer and (B) you get matched with a writer whose wheelhouse is the sort of thing you like to read.

But if you go into it for the party -- for the excitement of seeing your match, for the agony of doing a good job, for the joy of reveals, for reading all the other cool fic on Yuletide morning, you'll have a good time.

Ugh, I'm beginning to wish I'd never volunteered to do that spreadsheet, lol. Maybe I should update it to say "Mrs Snape will not be commenting on_coal, please ignore any imposters trying to start shit".
