The Dirty Energy Source

Do you want to make a spreadsheet about spreadsheets?
Do you still need to figure out what two other fandoms you should request beside the only one you really want fic for?
Or are you trolling ALL the letter posts for placeholders, just so you can write those people some nice, dry coal?

We want to know all about it.

Me too. Honestly, what I really want is sub!Ronan and Top!Declan.

Where's Untherius?

(Anonymous) 2014-10-23 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen him in the sign-up summary yet. It honestly feels like it wouldn't be Yuletide without him.

da

My brain has been trained to ignore spellcheck squiggles in fandom because so many fannish terms/names aren't in the dictionary and I can't be assed to add them all.

/coalie who checks her letter obsessively before and after posting it, however

If he doesn't show up this may be the year that I can finally request Sophie fic...!

Re: Do you have a favorite offer? Do you have a favorite request?

(Anonymous) 2014-10-23 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, you might not get matched on it? Also, don't feel bad if you decide to drop it. If it's grown into something a lot of people are requesting, then you can read and enjoy their fic and maybe comment to say that you still really love the fandom, but you've decided to give your other canons as chance to get fic?

I guess I could but it seems that most of the Peter/Nightingale shippers are actively kinking on those aspects so I'm not sure they would gel with my request even then? I don't like to put people off the fandom though :/

Well, it was the kind of misspelling that changes the pronunciation of the character's name, which is what makes me think that the requester didn't care about the character. Think the Jaime-->Jamie mix-up that happens in Blue Beetle fandom all the time; it's the sort of thing you generally only mix up if you don't know how to pronounce Jaime. (Not that it's a big deal in the grand scheme of things if random Yuletide participant A doesn't care about my favourite character, it was just a bummer.)

Point definitely taken about the brainfart, though. And having tried to listen to an audiobook of Ancillary Justice, I know what you mean about having to remember to check spellings.

Also considering this except I have matches on everything but the 2 I really want

See, now you are making me regret the Raven Cycle pairing I asked for, because all I want is sub!Ronan who everyone tops.

NEXT YEAR.

Obviously you don't have to request it if you don't want fic about the ship at all. But if you generally enjoy the ship as long as it's not written in a particular way, you could well write something like "if you write Nightingale/Peter, please address the power and age difference between them instead of glossing over it; otherwise I would prefer gen". That should make it clear, no?

And I don't think kinking on it means you can't address the potential problems of it? Personally I enjoy mentor/student relationships a lot, so in that regard I do kink on them. But if I write mentor/student ships, I'm still going to address the fact that the mentor will probably have reservations, that he will worry about potentially taking advantage of his student, that the student might feel uncomfortable with certain aspects of that relationship. And from what I've seen in fics in this fandom, most writers do an excellent job with that ship.

Yeah, how dare they like things and be disappointed when other people in their fandom don't like those things? Such entitled jerks.

Re: Change One Thing

(Anonymous) 2014-10-23 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
If I hadn't seen it in needy fandoms (zero offers twenty minutes before close), I never would've offered that fandom, matched to the person, and written them the one fic that exists in the fandom and that was pretty much the fic of their hopes and dreams. I guess we could all add extras in our bucket offers or something, but I probably still would have missed it, because there's only so much I can read on the tag set/whatever before the words start blurring and no longer register.

I've never wanted to request anything that would break the character rule and I still fucking hate it. It just sucks that they're punishing people who genuinely want big-name characters as they appear in/interact with small canons just because some dumbasses might take advantage of them being in a fandom's tags to try sneakily requesting them in the too-big canon they came from.

Like, if someone wanted to nominate Wolverine under Runaways so they could get cute fic about Molly and him and how she now thinks he's a jerkface after having a crush on him so long just let them. And if someone else just requests Wolverine and their letter is all about an X-Men adventure then ODAO the hell out of them.

I also went back-button on a potential f/f treat for somebody, when they bashed m/m in their dislikes. Speaking of cutting your own flesh...

someone who likes m/f, m/m and f/f

Re: To people who nominated the things I want to offer

(Anonymous) 2014-10-23 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you to the people who nominated what I wanted to request, even if you haven't requested those fandoms yet and I really, really want to treat you, too. I'm just glad my forgetting about the noms period didn't result in missing out on too much.

Actual bashing? :/ I'm fine with anyone saying they dislike slash or het or whatever, but people who bash m/m are always a bit suspicious to me.

FWIW, I know more than a few ESL fans who might not get their letters intensively beta'd but will absolutely do so for their assignments, although I'd call their unbeta'd writing more 'confusing' than 'terrible'....

I imagine the same goes for native speakers who struggle with mechanics.

I actually don't agree that's true. With one or two glaring exceptions, comics were treated brilliantly this year. The genre that's ended up most fucked this year is actually TV shows/single installment movies, because all the extended universe/linked fandom stuff elsewhere worked out great for getting numbers down for franchises.
