The Dirty Energy Source

Do you want to make a spreadsheet about spreadsheets?
Do you still need to figure out what two other fandoms you should request beside the only one you really want fic for?
Or are you trolling ALL the letter posts for placeholders, just so you can write those people some nice, dry coal?

We want to know all about it.

Two of my identities are both "primary" level identities - years of development put into each, different set of fandoms, large-ish circle of friends (friend-level where you have phone numbers & may have met in person). Two are in the secondary level of development - no real friends yet, but have participated in a few exchanges (including Yuletide) and talk in namespace to people. And then the fifth is a newbie. :D

The main problem is that I'm paranoid about IPs and thus constantly have to make sure that I'm not using the same IP to post for different ones. The fic writing isn't an issue.

only that the fics i truly want exist solely in my head, despite my inability to write them as they deserve to be written.

The best part is I now sort of ship it? I can't think of two people who deserve each other more.

I've written for him before and found him to be an incredibly earnest recipient who left a long, delighted comment full of meta ramblings and enthusiasm. I'd vote for this intro being a rather awkward attempt to say that he doesn't really mind what you write, he'll like it anyway, but wrapped up in intellectual pretension that obscures his attempt at humour.

Angelmaker, by Nick Harkaway!

It's basically about a mild-mannered watchmaker (who was the son of a notorious gangster, but is well out of that life, really) who gets caught up in a plot engineered by various shadowy organizations and a quasi-immortal dictator, all vying for a clockwork beehive with the potential to end the world. Loving sci-fi-tinged riffs on pulpy spy novel clichés ensue.

And it has SUCH a good cast of characters. Among them:

EDIE BANISTER (She is my favourite.), a little 90-year-old lady with a terrible pug, and a not-so-former superspy. (She's bi and has a complicated romantic relationship with the genius mathematician lady who creates the beehive doomsday device. She also has an extensive history of crossdressing for the purposes of missions and foiling plots to take over the world. SHE’S SO GREAT.)

And a motley crew of gangsters, thieves, submarine captains, attorneys, and various others. The language in the book is great fun, too--really verbose in a way that I found delightful (but might be a bit much for some). Basically, it's pulpy and clever while also being a bit philosophical and occasionally heartbreaking in the best way.

That's one word for it. ;) I am well aware that I am ridiculous.

Okay, Edie has sold me. :D Putting it in my offers & ordering the book.

I'm going to request a Nick Drake or Simon and Garfunkel song next year. Just have to decide on one now.

I nominated Minsc! I'm still unsure if I'm actually going to request that fandom since I wanted to do another playthrough first, but now I really want that prompt to be written. *__* Viconia would be so unimpressed!

The time I was a shitlord:

- Carefully offer characters on sign up so as not to get incest requests.

- Get request for NOTP instead of the incest I'd feared.

- Put on big-girl panties, write NOTP shipfic, get good reviews & some recs.

- Respond to someone's nice review/rec of my fic (in which they say that they can tell that the author truly ships the pairing) with a gloating comment saying that I actually don't ship it, and wouldn't have written it except the recip requested it.

- Feel like an asshole for years to come, and even though I'm atheist, pray every night that my recip never saw that comment and that I didn't ruin their Yuletide with my self-congratulatory preening.

Oh gosh, I would have LOVED that category and would have been so there. :( Tom Daley could've gone in there too, and Ian Thorpe, and Johnny Weir, I suppose, although I'm not sure anybody would have wanted Weir fic.

Next year I am so doing Openly Gay Athletes RPF and Openly Lesbian Athletes RPF. Those are genius categories.

Re: Who else hasn't decided what they're offering?

(Anonymous) 2014-10-20 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
One fandom I'm offering has a few wonderful, perfect letters I'd love to write for, and then one that's...not terrible, but very short, only gives one quite generic prompt, and overall gives the impression of a way more casual attitude towards Yuletide. I'd really rather write for one of he other letters, but I'm not sure I'll have it in me to write more than one fic in this fandom, so I'm thinking of taking that offer down...

The person whose prompts are basically all about trans headcanons. The writer seems nice and says ODAO, but I suspect that anything I wrote wouldn't make them happy, which is why I'm not offering those fandoms now.

Manchester City primer for fans new to Fottball RPF, in three parts. Totally got me invested in a team I had only vaguely heard about.

Let me tell you the epic tale of the Unwritten Werewolf Porn.

About three Yuletides ago, I got assigned to somebody who wanted weird porn. They wanted a slash werewolf AU where one character dominates and then claims the other. There were plenty of gen outs, but I was pretty sure they were really after the werewolf porn. Thing is, I thought it was a fantastic prompt. The characters they requested were slashy as hell and the dynamic worked really well with the canon aspects of their relationship.

Coalies, I was all about this werewolf porn.

Problem was, the fandom was a spy action movie and I couldn't think of any obvious way to insert werewolves into the universe. Were they open about being werewolves? How did it impact their jobs? Did they retain human level intelligence as wolves? So many questions.

I was halfway through writing it and nearly at deadline point, when my flatmate phoned me to tell me that my 4 foot snake had escaped its vivarium and gotten into the air conditioning and that they were now leaving to visit their parents in another country and couldn't do anything about it.
I was also visiting my parents in another country and spent the next few days booking flights and then winkling an angry python out of a duct. There was no time to finish the story.

So I took the easier gen out. I wrote it quickly. It was...reasonable.
I wanted to finish the fic and treat them but by the time I got round to it, too much time had passed, and I just felt too weird about sending this complete stranger werewolf porn out of the blue. What if they weren't into the fandom any more? Or werewolves? Or porn?
It sits in my hard drive, strange, out of place, unloved.
And that is the tale of my Yuletide Regret.

TLDR: Couldn't finish great porn because of snakes. Wrote mediocre gen fic instead.

I saw a letter offering 3 fandoms I want to treat, and I was so sad when that was the letter that greeted me.
