What I mean is beta readers will ask off the bat, is this SPAG, is this plot, what. Of course it's the author's responsibility. If the requester doesn't list it, no one in that chain will look at it. I know plenty of beta readers who think it's rude to go beyond what the author asks.

I am a different beta, and I always mention it if something seems OOC to me. I ask what they want me to concentrate on, which doesn't mean I'm going to let a bunch of spelling errors slip by if they want a plot beta.

Also with the small fandoms of Yuletide, the last-minute beta may not be familiar with the fandom. "Oh, they don't want OOC" is completely irrelevant to a beta in that case.
