The Dirty Energy Source

Do you want to make a spreadsheet about spreadsheets?
Do you still need to figure out what two other fandoms you should request beside the only one you really want fic for?
Or are you trolling ALL the letter posts for placeholders, just so you can write those people some nice, dry coal?

We want to know all about it.

Character matching

(Anonymous) 2014-10-20 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I have a fandom that I want to request and I like 4 of the characters out of 10, but three of the characters make an OT3 and the last character I just find really interesting. To match someone do they have to have offered all of the characters I requested? What if they offer more characters? Would they still be matched to me? If I want to match someone who wants to write the OT3 would it be better if I dropped the 4th character? I'm just a little confused.

Yeah, writers have to match all their recip's requested characters.

Re: Character matching

(Anonymous) 2014-10-20 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, to match with you they'd have to offer A, B, C, D or Any. Someone who ships A/B/C and only A/B/C would probably never match to you, because they have no reason to offer D too.

If you want to match with the OT3 people, you'd need to drop D.

Gatcha! It looks like people who offer more characters but not All can also match but I'd rather have the chance to match with the other OT3 people. Thanks for the help.

I'll drop the D if you know what I mean and I think you do.

As a slash coalie I have no idea what you mean or why'd you even want to say that.

Get help and accept that life is incomplete without at least two Ds.

Transmen have penises if they want them. Artificial or renaming their unaltered AFAB body parts, both are valid.

Forcing your bigender views on others helps no one.

I was making a joke too. You made an earnest "trans people exist" joke, I countered with an earnest "bigender isn't an accepted thing anymore" joke.

Looks at replies above this and is slightly amused since all four characters are girls.

Re: Character matching

(Anonymous) 2014-10-20 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
To match, they have to have offered all the ones you've requested, but if they offer more characters (or any) they can still end up writing for you. The idea with offers is that you're listing any character you'd be happy to write, but there's no guarantee you'll get every character.

I'd request the three OT3 characters and then add a note in the letter mentioning you would be okay with the fourth character's inclusion, or you could include a prompt with that character (and the other three, of course).

Re: Character matching

(Anonymous) 2014-10-20 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yes that seems like the best idea if I want shippy fic and I do. I so do. Thankfully the 4th character is in the tag set so I'm not trying to sneak them in.

Re: Character matching

(Anonymous) 2014-10-20 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
I have a different question:

If I offer 'any' and match with someone who has requested A and B, do I have to write A and B, or can I write any of the other nominated characters?

Re: Character matching

(Anonymous) 2014-10-20 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, you have to write however many/few characters they request, unless they specifically say otherwise.

Re: Character matching

(Anonymous) 2014-10-20 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
You have to write what your recipient asked for.

Re: Character matching

(Anonymous) 2014-10-20 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
You have to write A and B.

Re: Character matching

(Anonymous) 2014-10-20 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
You have to write A and B. You can only write any for someone who requests any.

Yep. I've been amusing myself by thinking of that entire part of the thread as one person replying to themselves over and over.

Re: Character matching

(Anonymous) 2014-10-20 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
I have a question, too! One fandom I'm requesting has a long list of nominated characters, and I'm requesting A, B, and C (spelling out that I only expect fic for one of them). However, this combination of characters is rather unusual, and the canon is so big that I doubt anyone will offer "any". Should I leave out on of the characters to increase the chances of being matched? Hope for the best? (Actually I suppose the combination might make it easier to get matched to me on purpose. Hm.)

Re: Character matching

(Anonymous) 2014-10-20 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
On a personal note, I normally would only off A&B on one of my current offers, but the letter I want to match to is asking for A,B,C so I'm hoping that helps me game the system.

You will be easier to match if your assortment isn't so unrelatd. But if your letter's been recced or someone has told you they want to treat/be assigned to you (as is the case with me and the coalie who's letter I love), don't rock that boat.
