The Dirty Energy Source

Do you want to make a spreadsheet about spreadsheets?
Do you still need to figure out what two other fandoms you should request beside the only one you really want fic for?
Or are you trolling ALL the letter posts for placeholders, just so you can write those people some nice, dry coal?

We want to know all about it.

Arguing for OR matching

I can't believe this person is seriously arguing for OR matching instead of AND. "What would be different?" like, what are you, a fucking idiot? And using that WTF-icon just comes off as rude to me. Also, that's not the impression I'm getting from letters AT ALL.

If nothing would be different, why bother switching? Her logic is suspect.

That's a really good point! If I still had an LJ account I'd say as much. Sucks that all anon comments are screened (and I suspect that one wouldn't get unscreened).

It's on LJ, anon comments are turned off there. Screened anon comments are only on on DW and the community community.

I prefer AND to OR, more chance to match on somebody who is interested in the same character combo.

Zero and single character request (usually additionally asking for characters I deliberately didn't offer) are difficult enough to navigate as is. I'd prefer min char 2 for requests as well.

Yeah, exactly. Making it OR makes it more likely to receive some character study or whatever, which really wouldn't interest me all that much. I want characters interacting!

And I agree. Requests like that are hard to get a handle on what they want, so it wouldn't make sense out of that perspective either.

She always argues with the mods about something. Every year. I suspect it's part of her Yuletide tradition.

I didn't know that, thanks for the info. I've put gehayi on my STAY-AWAY-FROM-AND-NEVER-TREAT list now, that's for sure.

It's not just for Yuletide! I used to help mod a small exchange and every year she'd whine that her fandoms - fandoms that didn't fit the theme of the exchange - weren't included and agitate for us to change the entire exchange just so she could participate. I told her she was welcome to take the idea of our exchange and make her own with an expanded theme that could include her fandoms but to my knowledge she never did. She just kept showing up like clockwork to complain.

Yep. I run a fic comm, and she's shown up to complain there, too, even though she hardly ever participates. I don't think she feels like part of a community until she's made her dissatisfaction known about something or other.

Gehayi highlights, fyi:

1a. Wrote a spitefic/issuefic bashing 50SoGfor someone whose Yuletide letter said nothing about hating the canon
1b. Said in fic that asexuality was a disability, then when this was pointed out, backpedaled by claiming she meant non-heteronormativity was a disability
1c. Wrote the fic to fix consent issues... while forcing a poly relationship on a character at the end of the fic

2. Asked for Madoka Magica in Yuletide, clearly did not watch the canon (prompt was "What was X?" when X was the subject of several episodes)

3a. Found someone who had accidentally plagiarized a couple lines of gehayi's fic, confronted plagiarizer, who made a genuine apology, took the fic down, and said they hadn't realized where they got the phrase from
3b. Proceeded to post shit about them all over the internet, including the stop_plagiarism comm after plagiarizer had already apologized

4a. Banned trans female characters from femgenficathon
4b. Wankily kicked a fic out of femgenficathon because it's unfeminist to write about a character who chooses to prioritize motherhood over a sports career, never mind that it was a nuanced story that didn't say other women should make the same choice

hadn't realized where they got the phrase from = wrote something from memory and thought it was from the canon

Wow... that's an economy-sized version of Messed Up. Definitely adding this one to my Do Not Treat list.

2-3 are forgivable. 1 & 4b are pretty messed up.

4a gets her on my default list.

Isn't she also the one that argued for including Lewis and vaguely threatened to flounce from Yuletide if it weren't approved because not including it ~didn't make her feel welcome?

She did include trans female characters the next year, but very grudgingly.

The rules of the ficathon stated no stories focusing on pregnancy or motherhood, so kicking the fic out wasn't out of the blue, but I was hating the rule already.

No trans women AND no mothers??

Damn. What a myopic fucking view of women she has.

1a-c: Recipient liked fic & wrote long comment about it. 'Forced into poly relationship' interesting way to define story that ends 'Do you want to? Ana nodded.'

4a: Reconsidered, changed rules, owned to mistake

(Anonymous) 2014-10-21 08:01 am (UTC)(link)
The recipient did turn out to have loved that fic, but gehayi had no way to know that while writing the story. The requested characters did indicate a parody, but the recipient could have wanted an affectionate parody, not a canon-hating one.

Ah, the femgenficathon! I remember that. Didn't remember it was her though, so thanks for the reminder.

She wrote a fricking awesome fic for me in an exchange once: long, plotty, great characterizations, beautifully realized rarepair, etc. And we'd had an argument not long before, so I was actually pretty touched by the experience. She could have phoned it in, or even just written a fic that incorporated fewer of my optional details and that was more to her taste than mine, and instead she made a real effort and wrote me the fic of my dreams.

I agree that she can be contentious, and she's definitely made some mistakes, but I don't think she's an unmitigated asshole.

Re: Arguing for OR matching

She wrote me a fantastic, long, plotty story for a fairly challenging canon/prompt, including a whole bunch of my favorite things, for an exchange. It was really clear that she'd tried very hard to write something I would like, and she didn't know me at all.

These days I don't talk to her much because I do find some of her behavior pretty annoying, and we have no fandoms in common, and I'm still really suspicious of her attitudes re: trans women (did she ever really say anything about having changed her beliefs?), but I agree, she's not an unmitigated asshole.
