The Dirty Energy Source

Do you want to make a spreadsheet about spreadsheets?
Do you still need to figure out what two other fandoms you should request beside the only one you really want fic for?
Or are you trolling ALL the letter posts for placeholders, just so you can write those people some nice, dry coal?

We want to know all about it.

Archive-locking Yuletide fics

Have you ever archive-locked a gift fic so that it's only visible to AO3 users? Or received one that was locked? Would you think it was weird? I always lock my RPF fics as a matter of course, and on the one hand I feel a bit strange doing it with something written for a big exchange, but on the other Yuletide seems like exactly the time to be extra wary of things getting linked to a wider non-fannish audience. Thoughts? (Or am I overthinking and nobody cares or even notices that fics are locked.)

I requested an RPF pairing a couple years ago, and in my letter mentioned I was leery of the people involved - very online-culture savvy people - finding either my request or any fic that resulted. My gift writer archive-locked the fic, which I hadn't really thought of as an option but was super glad about.

Good point! I hadn't thought about the fact that the recipient might be just as happy to have it locked to avoid outside attention as the writer. That makes me feel a bit less awkward about the "Here's your gift, PS it's locked tho" angle.

Yeah, I'm requesting an RPF ship for the first time this year and I made sure my DW had the "try to prevent search engines from indexing" checkbox before I made my letter public and I'm hoping if it gets written it'll be archive-locked. I won't freak out if it isn't but ideally!

nonny, if your journal is flagged as 18+ then dreamwidth will add meta headings that mean your post won't be indexed or visible in search at all, and wayback won't pick it up either.

I'm requesting and offering hockey RPF teams so I'm going to lock my fic and ask my writer to lock their fic in the optional details. I don't want Aja's dirty hands on them.

Oh shit we have to worry about Aja? WTF?

A shitload of hockey RPF writers deleted or locked their fic after catching wind that Aja meant to write an article about hockey RPF with links to articles.

Thread OP

She's the main source of my worry, actually, because I know she wrote an article about Yuletide last year linking to individual fics, and that there was a big kerfuffle in hockey RPF fandom that prompted a mass-locking after she tried to put together an article with links to individual authors and their stories. She is biiig on the attitude of, "But of course everybody wants their kinky NC-17 slash RPF very publicly shared with a wide non-fannish audience who know nothing about fanfic culture, why wouldn't they, I don't understand?"

I think we all know the answer to that.

I'm hoping to write a couple RPF treats this year and was planning on locking them. Yuletide participants all have to have an AO3 account anyway, so I don't think it'll be a big deal. Sure you won't get guest kudos, but I'll trade them for peace of mind any day.

I archive-locked mine one year because it was getting a lot of anon hate thanks to a post linking back to it. I emailed elyn to make sure it was okay and she said it was acceptable as a temporary measure, but they generally don't want archive-locked fic in the exchange. I don't think I've ever seen a rule about it, though, and I don't know if the newer mods care.

When I was looking to see who had/had not commented last year, I saw a lot of archive-locked fics. I don't know whether they did that at the time or later, but it doesn't seem to be uncommon. I wouldn't worry about it. Anyone doing Yuletide has at least one AO3 account by definition.

I wrote a very tiny, silly RPF treat last year for a friend and archive-locked it because I don't normally write RPF about living people and I'm not totally comfortable with it. (I wasn't worried about it getting much attention - I was shocked a few people besides my recip liked it.) I didn't ask the mods first and if they ever want to complain about it I'll just remove it from the Madness collection because fuck that.

This past year, for various reasons I archive-locked all my M and E rated fic. There are a lot of reasons people might archive-lock, and I wouldn't feel weird as a recip receiving a locked fic.

I have locked all RPF and mature fics for Yuletide in the past - but I usually wait until reveals. It's a matter of which fics I worry about being linked back to my IRL identity one day.

Locking hasn't stopped one of my Yuletide fics from having the highest kudos and bookmarks of anything I've ever written.

I'd have no problems getting an archive-locked fic at all.

If my recip asked me to archive-lock my fic I'd be a little upset because IMO that should be the writer's choice and now I can't get guest kudos or show it to my non-writer friends who never bothered to sign up for an account, but I'd comply and still write them something nice.
