Do you also feel like that about requesting comics of obscure webcomics? They're self-published too.

Not really, no. Even the rarest fandoms I came across in the past had a few non-Yuletide fics to their name from a variety of dates and authors. Those are obviously legit. When I come across noms where there's nothing out there except the commercial books, then I feel someone is doing some heavy marketing instead.

I've written and received fics that were the first ever for that fandom. That's a common Yuletide situation.

I know it is. But rarely of commercial self-published books marketed to propel them out of anonymity.

Get over yourself, coalie. If I was a self-published author looking to advertise, asking for fic in an exchange with >2k participants, most of which will never even see the prompt, wouldn't exactly strike me as the best way to bring in $$CASH MONEY$$.

What are you talking about? Every single participant will read this fanfic for this book they know nothing about, and buy multiple copies for all their friends! OP isn't a conspiracy theorist, just a realist.

Heck, I'm buying it right now and I don't even know which book it is. The promo is just that strong.

+1

Take a walk, OP.

I nominated a fandom (webcomic) last year that I'm pretty sure there still isn't any fic for.

Okay, I'm out as being a coalie, so I'll use specifics. I've asked for The Bone Palace in each of the last three exchanges I've been in, because I adore it. There are two fics on the archive - one I wrote last Yuletide for someone, and a fic that same someone wrote for me in return in a different exchange earlier this year. As far as I know, there is no other fic for this fandom anywhere on the Internet. But the two of us aren't marketers! We just genuinely adore this series and want fic, and I'd love it if more people read it & wrote for it.

I could easily see a similar situation existing for other tiny/nonexistent fandoms. Why do we have to assume bad faith/marketing when it could just as easily be legitimate fans interested in tiny fandoms?

What about obscure indie games? I regularly nom them, and they usually have no fanworks.

Sorry, but requesting obscure fandoms of your heart is what yuletide is all about, not caring about the prejudices of some fucking stupid coalie.

*I mean fics of webcomics, not comics of webcomics, haha.
