I guess this isn't the year I offer The Changeover. I do not want to deal with this person's prompts about a real earthquake.

Maybe next year. :(

I went ew automatically, but the actual prompt isn't what I expected. It's carefully worded, has personal context, and is clearly optional.

I'm half judgy and half sad. Yes, it's carefully worded, but it's still their first prompt, and that sense of place is clearly the most important thing about the canon for them. It's like they're asking for something that's way more about them than it is about the canon. And I can't do that prompt for SO many reasons. I just want to avoid it completely.

Yeah, totally fair to have that personal reaction--the prompt just wasn't what I was expecting.

That's fair too.

Fair enough to want to avoid it, although they do stress that it's optional and give good alternate prompts. (I think coal overthinks prompt order. Prompts come out in the order they come out.) But I can see why the sense of place of that canon would be important to someone, because the sense of place is so vital to that canon. I mean, the way the Changeover opens: Laura looks at a shampoo bottle and it's from Paraparaumu, where nothing romantic can happen. I remember reading the Changeover as a kid. It was the first time I ever read something magical set in a place that was recognisably NZ to me. That goes double for Christchurch - I can't think of anything else I've read set recognisably in Christchurch. Oracles and Miracles, I guess.

I'm not from Christchurch and I think it's (obviously) so understandable to want to avoid it as a prompt if you are, but I don't think it's a terrible prompt, either.

(unhappy coalie)

Yeah, but time is perhaps even more important! It has a very different feel to Christchurch in the 00s, for example. And they want The Changeover Characters Dealing With The Quakes. (Odd to meet that they've requested Winter. She'd have to be a pretty old lady at that point.)
