Burr is my favorite character in the show! I don't want to talk about it. It's very bad. Jefferson however is worse to just LIKE, so I'll deal with him in a bit more detail. Daveed Diggs holding merciless eye contact with the audience through every flounce of What'd I Miss is probably my, um, single top special-effect to pop out of the ""colorblind"" casting; it lends extra push to the casual malice Jefferson exudes. I... would read all the Jefferson POV stuff dealing with that carelessness that isn't. (In a weird way, Diggs' conscious, OTT inhabitation of the role makes Jefferson's calm self-righteousness much more lifelike, even as Diggs and the writing together set TJ's pedestal on fire. If--if you punch the fourth wall twice it just becomes good character acting? I don't know how that works. But it's hot!)

I am really not sure what this is saying, but it seems racist. Like... that's saying 'this character has extra malice because he's black', right? That's what I'm reading?

I'm so confused by the whole thing, but that seems like a potential interpretation. I got stuck at the multiple quotations around colorblind.

I think the multiple quotations were to indicate that it wasn't actually colorblind casting (which it wasn't, the only two roles even open to white people in the casting calls were King George and Peggy/Maria), even though people call it that. But I have no idea why you'd bother saying "colorblind" at all in that case, so who knows.

Yeah, I get what it means but I have no idea why that point is included or what relevance it has to the rest of the admittedly incomprehensible letter.

Ah, sorry to overexplain, then! I'm with you on that.

I am not familiar with the fandom, but I'm not seeing what you're seeing just from reading the letter.

that was my first reading but the staging of What'd I Miss is supposed to foreground Jefferson as a slave owner so it might also just be an awkward way to say "seeing a black character play this racist slave owner while surrounded on stage by slaves as he sings about his massive success as a revolutionary who brings freedom gives it an extra punch".

Ah, that wasn't context I had! That makes it less creepy if that's what they meant, then.

How do you/the letter author know these things? Have you seen it on stage? Is there a full bootleg? I feel suddenly like I shouldn't have offered Hamilton since there's going to be staging details like this that I'm missing.

There's a 10 minute B-roll that showed clips of some scenes.

AYRT - thanks! I have seen some much briefer clips, but this is great.

ayrt

I've seen that B-roll that the anon linked and there was also a big review with LMM somewhere I don't now remember (sorry) where he talked about this staging.

I'll google around for it, that sounds like it's worth reading regardless. I'm very recent to the fandom so I'm still catching up to the wise old mavens who have been in it for 2 months already.
