New Year's Resolutions

Now that the NYR collection has closed, I'd be interested to know how many of you coalies wrote NYR stories this year? What kind of feedback you received?

(Do you think the posts Morbane posted in the community to feature the stories helped you to get more audience than the stories in that fandom would usually get?)

You can just post to the YT comm with a google form survey, Morbane. You'll probably get a broader range of feedback there.

You... seriously can't fathom that other people may be interested in this?

are you the literal-minded coalie everyone is suddenly talking about? that was clearly a joke.

You... seriously can't fathom that coalies, from time to time, accuse each other of being Morbane, for great justice and hilarity?

I was merely giving Morbane a helpful suggestion, since in my own time moderating various things I've found that google forms are a great way to collect participant feedback. Nowhere did I say that coalies can't also discuss the topic on _coal.

The other sign of the overly literal coalie is the early-sentence ellipsis. I'm not committed enough to go find the other examples, but I have noticed this.

...like this? Or...like this?

Either way, shh, don't tell them how to avoid detection!

Dammit, I do both of those, and now I'm paranoid of being confused with them! I'll just have to be super metaphorical to make up for it.

Never written a NYR but really value Morbane's summary posts, else I'd never see the stories.

Ditto. I don't read most of them, but that's because I don't know the fandoms. If I know it, I usually take a look.

I thought the collection stayed open (for compulsory contribution) for a lot longer, and now I'm sitting on a really long unfinished fic for a movie fandom that's so dead (and wasn't nominated this year).

You can post it in the next NYR collection after it opens. It's fine to write to previous year's prompts. Maybe just mention in your author's note that you ran out of time before the last collection closed if you want.

SA - thank you, I guess I'll just wait instead of randomly gifting them some time. And it does seem like NYR gets relatively more traffic right after the yuletide rush (maybe?) so there's that - I just hope this is a fic she still at least kind of wants by then, lol.

Yes, right after the new year people are still watching the comm, so you'll get a few more eyes than you would in, say, July.

Oh, no!

Though, I'm pretty sure they open the NYR collection again at some point :) I recall being able to post stories to previous years' collections... Maybe it happens after the reveals of this year's Yuletide?

Gift it to them as a treat?

Haven't the NYR stories always been posted to the community?

At any rate, I wrote a few NYRs several years ago, they were posted to the community, and I got very little feedback. I DID get comments from all the recips, but, overall, it was a discouraging experience.

The one I posted years ago didn't even get a comment from the recip! Who was a friend of mine at the time!

!!!

Seriously, though, it was discouraging. I have thought about writing a NYR fic since, but never gotten around to it.

Wow, that seriously sucks!

I'd consider writing one for the perfect prompt . . . but then I write most of those as treats.

I wrote one in a medium-for-Yuletide fandom and got a great response: several lovely comments, including a nice one from my recip, and a bunch of kudos.

I know you can post for years-old prompts, whether or not the fandom was nominated recently, but is there anything wrong with posting NYR fic for a fandom that's since sized out of Yuletide?

People would definitely look askance at you if you posted a NYR fic for a fandom like Supernatural, but if you're posting in a moderately-sized fandom like Psych or Yami no Matsuei, I can't imagine that anyone would care.
