I saw it for a written canon and it just confused me. I guess it's possible they listened to an audiobook version though.

NA, and I listen to most books as audiobooks. Which is why I checked the author's website before nominating the characters from it. (It wasn't on AO3 yet, except in the tag set of another challenge, in which the characters' names were very misspelled, sigh.)

And let me tell you about the time I got coal, because the author had consistently misspelled one of the character names. Which, all she had to do was look at the fucking tag. (Or at canon. Or get a beta reader who knew that canon, instead of her BFF.)

/unreasonably annoyed by these things.

Oh yes, I think if it was spelled wrong in my gift-fic, I would be pretty frustrated as well!

That's definitely one of my pet peeves! I find it quite hard to read a story which misspells character names, especially from an English language literary fandom where there's usually no ambiguity.
