I, uh, may have thought of a new scenario to put in a theoretical IF game I might build for one of those prompts, depending on which it is.

It's probably the same letter, since it says they're open to IF! This one:

Eeeexcellent. Now I just need to work out some coding well enough that I don't make a hash of it, while getting everything else done in November.

I may take you up on that! I'm probably not going to go for anything too much more complicated than CYOA, but that still needs to be able to do things like loop people back into narrative points, check for possession of items, and so forth.

da

Have you ever tried Twine? It's balls at any kind of state tracking more complex than "is this binary variable set to yes or no," but it can do the things you mention and it's extremely straightforward to use.

I have not tried Twine, because I was under the vague impression that it was really complicated. I've done a little with Ren'py, but I don't really like the way it looks for text-only stories.

Twine is the opposite of complicated; you can pick it up in an afternoon. This also means that it's really difficult to do anything complex with it (some people seem to manage, but I find it a headache), which is why I don't personally like using it, but if what you want to do is fairly simple, it's got a lower barrier to entry than any other authoring system I've tried.
