every. year.

It's a pretty innocuous thing. Literally, they say in the post: write women for yuletide. And tag it.

I do not understand the hate that this gets every yuletide.

it feels vegetabley

From your point of view, or theirs? Genuinely curious, since I don't give a shit about a lot of things.

Why is it vegetabley to write about women?

Because apparently some people are only into fandom for the male characters, and cannot conceive of why anyone would want to write or read about women except for some sort of theoretical social justice points.

It isn't, but there's a long history of this part of fandom treating writing women like it is. (Aja's most famous for it.) The fact that people feel the need to incentivize it is reminiscent of that for me, and it's enough to keep me away from the challenge, even if I don't judge others for taking part.

This. Like when people make it a "goal" to read a book by a female/minority author. It can be other-ing in the extreme. (And kind of implies you're a dipshit the rest of the time.)

That being said, I received a Misses Clause fic a few years ago by one of the mods that was freakin' awesome.

If the incentive is "more people read your fic with women in," then I'm all for it, because I like being able to find those fics, and as a writer of female characters, I also appreciate the feedback.

Like I said, I don't judge other people's choice to participate. I'm genuinely glad you get something good out of it; if it's going to exist, it should benefit somebody, and it sounds like you find it beneficial.

For me, it feels like the incentive is "you get to tell everybody that you wrote a fic with a woman in it, look, look, look," and I'm not interested in drawing attention to myself in that way. It's clear, however, that that isn't an impression everybody has, so my general feeling at this point is ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. The people who enjoy it will use it, and the people who recognize my stories' characters will know that they're female.

Eh, after creeping on ao3, the one who wrote the post seems to only write women, so it's not vegetabley for them at any rate.
