How do you expect people to care about your fic if they're not familiar with the source? How would they even be able to appreciate how good it is?

+1

I'm always weirded out by people who rec fics you can read without needing to know canon. Like, for me the mark of a really great fic is that it engages with canon in a thoughtful way.

A fic can engage with canon in a meaningful way and still be enjoyable to people who don't know the canon, though.

A good example of this are pre-canon fics. If someone writes a fic about how Bob became the person we see in canon, this engages with canon in a meaningful way and is interesting for people who know what Bob is like in canon. But since it's pre-canon, it doesn't require intricate knowledge of canon events and can be enjoyable for someone who doesn't know canon - I've read pre-canon fics with tropes or kinks or other story elements I enjoyed without knowing the canon. It was basically like reading origfic full of stuff I love - and sometimes it made me want to check out the canon to see more of the character(s) who inspired that fic.

NA: There are fics that can be enjoyed without knowing the canon, though. You just read it like it's original fic, and it works. But if you know the canon you can enjoy it on a deeper level.

Reading fics for canons I didn't know is how I've gotten into certain canons.

Seriously. I mean, of course people don't give a shit about fic in a fandom they don't know. Why would they?
