Bullshit. There used to be FAR more knowing that ODAO, never mind letters which were extra-specially-optional. There's way, way more of a "if you don't write your recipient what they want you failed", as signalled by the fact that people will now drop a fandom entirely if they see just one letter they don't like.
I feel like it's pretty extreme in both directions -- writers doing whatever without consideration for the recipient (attempted rape in a Yuletide fic, really??) and recipients with these insanely long and detailed letters full of head canon and DNW. People are bound to be disappointed either way.
