Do you only give a crap about characters you're attracted to?

Either way, if you only request women you'll get fic about women (unless someone's an asshole and pulls a gay bashing dragon, but a vast majority of participants are not jerks like that). If you want to avoid your writer putting a lot of focus on the cast as a whole you could also say "I'd prefer any characters that weren't requested only have minor appearances if they have any at all" or something.

I know it must blow your mind to think that some people truly do not give two shits about dudes and do not find them interesting and often in fact find them off-putting and so offensively ubiquitous to the point where they sometimes wish male characters weren't included anywhere in any media produced by anyone ever again. But hey, you learn something new every day. :)

Nobody is saying you can't feel the way you feel about it. The point is saying that kind of thing in your letter may likely put people off from treating. That is the point of this whole thread. It's not about liking what you like for whatever reason, it's about how not to come off sounding like a jerk.

+1 All you gotta do is put "unrequested characters" in your DNW and then the mods will even have your back.

It's not just a men vs. women problem either. I feel other nonnie's pain about unrequested ships. Sometimes, you have to be firm and say "No unrequested ships. Especially no A/B." if that's the juggernaut with the shippers who simply cannot resist inserting it everywhere.

So what personality traits do 100% of men have that 100% of women do not, and vice versa? What character traits are irreversibly linked to gender in a way that makes men completely uninteresting to you?

I'm a woman but this "men aren't interesting" attitude always comes off as assigning specific traits and experiences onto someone just because of their gender which, yikes. I guess people who have gender-atypical traits and experiences don't exist.

Yes, this.

Oh do please teach us to be as enlightened as you. You don't even see gender, right? You live in a post-patriarchal world. Some of your closest friends are probably women!

Re: What would stop you from treating a letter?

(Anonymous) 2017-10-01 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, stop. "Gender does not dictate personality" is not the same thing as saying we live in a post-patriarchal world.

However, I am just as uncomfortable with people assigning positive characteristics to me based on my gender as I am with them assigning negative characteristics to me. I'd like to be judged as an individual, not as a gender, thanks.

omg chill, people can be disinterested in shit and it's really not a big deal

"I do not find men interesting" =/= "men are inherently and objectively uninteresting"

I think it has less to do with traits and more to do with male privilege that permiates men’s worldview. The patriarchy is insufferable tbh.

Stop handmaidening for men’s feelings. It’s really cool you think you’re not like other girls and all but shut the fuck up, Arya Stark.

God, the ridiculous response to this. Not wanting to be stereotyped is catering to men and saying I'm not like other girls, apparently!

They're not men. They're fictional characters, and they do not need you whiteknighting for them. Because they are fictional.

Re: What would stop you from treating a letter?

What an idiotic reasoning. Are you even serious?

Re: What would stop you from treating a letter?

(Anonymous) 2017-10-01 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
For fuck's sake, I'm not whiteknighting for fictional characters, I'm asking what exactly would make someone not care about a character specifically and only because of their gender. Y'all are really defensive over this.

If there's an explanation that doesn't involve stereotyping, I'd like to hear it. Otherwise, yeah, I'm going to be uncomfortable with people stereotyping all women, even if it's in a positive way.

Do you only give a crap about characters you're attracted to?

Because of course lesbians must be attracted to all women ever, it is true, and can't at all be interested in stories about women period, attraction or not.
