Re: Requested a person or character associated with scandal? You may be entitled to an extra gift!

In the sense that after signups close, recips can't do anything about what fic they get and authors can, yes. But really, the only additional options writers all have is to default.

Theoretically, maybe. In reality, probably not unless they offered multiple fandoms that their recip requested. When the option is "write to a canon you didn't offer or default" that is a shifty, unfair option.

What would your solution be? Sure there's things they might do, most of them would have to be on a case by case basis. If they just announce anyone that matched on a canon or characters involved in the thing can, idk, default and still be guaranteed a gift, you must see how that could very likely go.

I honestly can't tell whether they just don't anticipate getting contacted by as many writers and they're explaining why, while being tone-deaf about how this comes across.

Excuse you, it wasn't tone deaf at all. Morbane is trying to protect the recips as she should. It's really easy for the authors to deal with the issue.

I assume this is a troll attempting to stir up even more anti-mod sentiment.

Dude, it's pretty obvious sarcasm.

People have been defending some pretty stupid things here lately tho.

I am doing it, although I'm combining several writing projects and don't expect to get that far.

I can think of lots of options. Ask if they can send a draft to check them off as having completed an assignment even if they don't do anything with it, ask them to complete a treat, ask them if there's another requester who would probably like the fic. Double assigning is handy, defaulting sounds pretty drastic.

Are there a ton of canons affected? I can think of House of Cards and Baby Driver off the top of my head. I think I saw Ben Affleck in the tagset somewhere. There's All The President's Men RPF, which might be focusing on the irl Woodward/Bernstein but I guess a fic writer could be thinking of Dustin Hoffman's portrayal.

But if they've already written a fic, it's a big ask to insist that they have to write another treat. Most yuletide participants only write one fic per exchange. There may still be over a month of writing time, but we have had assignments for nearly a month already, and some people managing their time to avoid writing overlap with real life commitments may not be in a position to write a new fic from scratch.

I don't think there are that many canons affected, no. Which is why I think it would be easy for them to accommodate writers too.

IIRC, in 2014 when the NovaMist socks were kicked out in the middle of the exchange, the authors matched to them were allowed to do various things, including posting their work with no recipient, or treating another person in the exchange as their official-unofficial recipient if the prompt matched.

It's a good thing that they're being considerate. I wonder what happens if a new scandal breaks closer to the deadline though.

Presumably the same thing they did for the Nova Mist situation? IIRC, didn't they give the writer the option of either completing the original assignment and gifting to the Yuletide Fairy, or giving them first crack at the PHs?

You can't double assign after assignments are sent out.

Presumably they're wary of new allegations coming out during November and December.

Re: Trick or treat works revealed

I found the gift and letter. While I am sympathetic to OP, I can tell which of their prompts their author wrote for and which of their trick likes they made sure to include, and I can see how someone thought those likes went well with noncon.

I do think the author should've confirmed through the mods that the recipient was open to noncon in this exchange since it is usually one of their DNWs, but the fic definitely wasn't ODAO.

Good Will Hunting RPF, I think.
