Re: Requested a person or character associated with scandal? You may be entitled to an extra gift!

Are there a ton of canons affected? I can think of House of Cards and Baby Driver off the top of my head. I think I saw Ben Affleck in the tagset somewhere. There's All The President's Men RPF, which might be focusing on the irl Woodward/Bernstein but I guess a fic writer could be thinking of Dustin Hoffman's portrayal.

I don't think there are that many canons affected, no. Which is why I think it would be easy for them to accommodate writers too.

Presumably they're wary of new allegations coming out during November and December.

Good Will Hunting RPF, I think.

Affleck being terrible definitely isn't new, though, tbh, considering his brother.

Spacey has been this way forever and most gay people have known this about him too. I could see the mass media confirmation could ruin RPF for you but fictional characters I don't think should be impacted by this at all*.

*YMMV thing and I don't think people shouldn't be able to bail. If I were a mod I would side-eye while still granting authors/recips with a do over (x2 in RPF fandoms) because how can you stan someone enough to want RPF but not know very common knowledge about how awful they are???

His character in Baby Driver has a weird relationship with the teenage title character. IDK about anything else that was nominated, but that's really uncomfortable in light of the allegations.

AYRT

Yeah and it's a valid reason to want to bail. But if your letter also says that you've "been a huge fan of Kevin* and have followed his career forever!" I'm going to ??? because his history is something that came up on basic googlings of his name (+1 if you google his name plus gay) long before this hit the mass news.

* Replace with any of the current exposes. All of them have had this stuff circling them for a long time. If you're only in it for the canon I don't expect you to do research but if you're into the actor/ess...cmon now.

Not everyone's letter says that, though? And even if they've heard the rumors, having them confirmed might be a bridge too far.

I never said they did?

I'm totally fine with people bailing on RPF, but bailing on fictional characters because of the actor? Come the fuck on. That's unfortunate, but it's not an acceptable reason to opt out of a fandom after the fact.

Yes, because what we now know about Bill Cosby in no way affects my ability to enjoy fluffy "Cliff Huxtable delivers a teenager's baby in the back of her car" fic.

No, wait, it totally does.

Sure, perfectly reasonable to feel that way. Just like it's perfectly reasonable to no longer want anything to do with a canon if it goes into territory that's a hard DNW for you - like rape. But the thing is shit like that happens with ongoing canons, and real life stuff, and sometimes you'll be unlucky and something will go from fandom of your heart, to get that shit away from me between assignments and reveals, but that's just bad luck, writers shouldn't have their yuletide buggered up over something that's not their fault.

WTF? Are you even reading the comments you're responding to? What could possibly be trolly about what the AYRTs comment?

Are you? Or are you seriously suggesting requesters should have to be saddled with fic that suddenly features a hard trigger like RPF about a real life rapist, so that their writer isn't inconvenienced?

People in this subthread weren't talking about RPF, but about fictional characters. Suddenly finding out something bad about an actor who plays a character you requested shouldn't be an acceptable reason to opt out of a fandom.

If the actor and character parallel in squicky ways, it should. I wouldn't want a novel about a serial killer after its author dismembered somebody, either.

+1

I understand why exceptions are made for RPF, but "actor turned out to be a massive creep" doesn't seem sufficient reason for the mods to let you change your requests. I'm not saying that it's wrong to be turned off the fandom by that sort of thing - it's unfortunate, but it doesn't warrant mod involvement.

A lot of circumstances beyond their control might turn a recipient - or in fact an author - off a fandom. Plot developments in ongoing fandom. Personal tragedies (if, say, you request/offer a fandom that prominently features characters suffering from cancer and a loved one dies of cancer between sign-ups and reveals, asking for/offering noncon and then becoming victim of sexual violence etc.). An actor dying in a tragic way.

All of that is a good reason not to read your story (as a recip) or to default (as a writer). But it's nothing that should give you a do-over. (Or to be more precise, if you get a do-over for this particular scandal, you also should get a do-over for all those other cases where you can't handle the fandom anymore through no fault of your own.)

Nominations for a baseball player who died suddenly during the nominations period were rejected one year, weren't they? There is precedence for mod intervention there.

Frankly, the personal tragedies you mention should be reasons for the mods to adjust things for you. The idea that morbane et al. would shrug and wring their hands in response to "I was raped and I no longer want to receive rape fic" is pretty awful.

I do't believe for a second they would. AYRT is way off base with that. Those are exactly the sorts of things mods would accomodate if they could, just privately.

Jose Fernandez died following nominations last year and his name was removed from the tagset at the nominator's request. They weren't rejected, no, and no one asked for or received fic about him.

I agree. There's a difference between characters and actors.
