How awkward/taboo is it to write a sequel to a giftfic if said sequel would hit one of the giftee's DNW's? To be clear, I wouldn't gift it to them, but it would be obviously connected to the first fic and use the events and set-up of the first fic as a springboard.

I think it's fine.

I agree that it's fine. Maybe you could add an author's note at the top in case your recip happens to come back to their gift one day to let them know they shouldn't read the sequel.

Probably not super taboo, but don't. If I were the giftee, I'd be upset, especially if the DNW is major and/or a trigger.

Yeah, strong agree, I wouldn't do it.

(If you absolutely MUST do it, I think it would be polite to (1) add it as another work in a series rather than another chapter, and (2) TAG IN BIG BOLD LETTERS that it contains one of the DNWs. You don't know whether it's a trigger or not, but erring on the side of caution is the humane thing to do.)

It's one of the archive warnings, so it should be fairly obvious right off the bat that it contains the DNW in addition to my own tags, which would be added for specificity.

Hmm. I'll have to think on this; I really want to write it, but I also don't want to cause them distress, even if it would be added as a separate piece in a series rather than another chapter.

Why not post the whole thing as a new fic? Repost the first fic as the first chapter with a note at the top that it's duplicate elsewhere, and then add the new material on? That way it wouldn't be anywhere your recip had to see it, and you'd be able to connect them?

If I were your recip, I think this is what I'd prefer.

i've done this before. Just add it in a series and don't gift it to the recip.

it's not gifted to them, it's not bound by their DNWs anymore.

Totally okay. Just recognize it's not FOR them and don't expect them to comment on it.

can you rework the idea a bit to stand alone?
