there's also 'highlight to read' or, you know, saying it's a season 2 request before instead of after. not everybody lives in the us.

it just would have been nice to not be spoiled for something i can't watch for another 2 months. and now that person, instead of maybe getting a treat after i watched it, isn't getting a treat from me.

Yes, you're whining about something that is your own fault since you knew you weren't caught up with all available canon, and you looked at someone's letter anyway expecting them to magically infer that you don't have access to the newest canon. That's just obnoxious.

_coal is being super quick to mock here. If it's that recent, it might well be within the grace period where even fandom spaces regard it as a spoiler and participating in those spaces requires spoiler warnings for new content. It's not entirely unreasonable to expect some kind of heads up before a request that it covers brand new canon in that context.

For example, most Marvel and Marvel-adjacent comms will ask that new canon entry content be cut/warned for between a few weeks (until it's out everywhere or on DVD, depending on the title) and most TV discussion comms I'm aware of will give at least 1-2 weeks after an episode aired until it's not considered spoilers.

Nah. If the original whiner had a leg to stand on, they would be warning us for spoilers in letters for x fandom. They know they did this to themself, so they're being coy about the deets.

You said you weren't going to treat them, so how could warning for spoilers be traced back to you?

If this was a discussion thing, sure. But the letter writer should expect their author is up to date (or they wouldn’t write it) and the writer should assume the recip is up to date (or they wouldn’t request it). It’s out of the norm to not be caught up (yes even with staggered released) and it is up to you to tell your author that you don’t know a certain part of canon and to avoid letters for fandoms you aren’t caught up on. Nobody forced you to look/offer. If you still want to do it anyone and hope that someone marks spoilers for you, that’s on you if you get burned.

if you wanna offer a fandom you're not caught up on you can do that but expecting people to put spoiler warnings in their letters is dumb as heck.

So... how do seasons 1-3 only people find each other to treat for if they're staying away from all letters for that fandom?

It wouldn't kill people with open, ongoing, updated-during-YT fandoms to say where they're up to before providing detailed canon-dependent prompts, which, sounds like this case was.
