Main goal: have a set of lists for myself of "these people haven't commented on shorter fic for whatever reason, so don't risk giving them any; 1k+ treats only" "these people are sporadic when it comes to commenting, so don't expect any if you decide to treat them," and "these people never comment and/or are badly behaving sock puppets, so you should find someone else to treat."

Secondary goal: increase my personal list of "these people are enthusiastic recipients" <- the 2016 Madness good recips list was added to my personal list, but I figured, "Why not share?"

Tertiary goal: share with _coal in the hopes it will be useful and that _coal will share their own experiences with recips and/or their own data lists so I can further refine my personal "to treat" and "probably not a good idea" lists.

Tertiary goal: live vicariously through the enthusiasm of yuletiders past.

Man, I want to live in this alternate universe everyone else does where you're so spoiled on choice for treats that you get to make lists of people worth writing for or not. Usually the fandoms I can write for get so few requests that if I get too picky about recips, I can't treat anyone at all.

Didn't Missy write dozens of treats last year? And there were several others who wrote 10+. Some people have lots of fandoms.

We also get into fandom/s for really amazing prompts so that we can write them.

Misura always writes lots too. Wasn't it like 57 last year?

Some of us are familiar with tons of fandoms. *shrug* I have 40+ potential letters to treat bookmarked in the app, and I'll need to narrow them down eventually because there's no way I'll write 40+ treats.

It's not only familiarity with many fandoms; it's more whether they get requested and that depends on who signs up and where those canons come from. There's a bunch of non-English canons I could write for, but a lot of fandoms that get requested are American, which I don't know and am not interested in - the overwhelming bulk of the Movies section and to a smaller extent the TV one too are from the US - whereas I presume many American participants are more likely to be familiar with those canons.

AYRT

This is true.

Also, in my case, it tends to be cumulative? Like, I've been doing Yuletide for a while and I just keep picking up new fandoms. And I keep my eyes peeled for old favorites that don't get a lot of love but get nommed and requested nearly every year.

DA

It also depends on what kind of write you are (imo). If you’re into writing to letters/prompts you have a lot of options and the sky is kinda your limit, especially if you’re someone who will get into new canons to write a prompt that has (trope/kink/dynamic/etc) you like. If you have ideas you already want to write or can only write a certain type of fic, you have to find letters that will let you do it, which can be tricky and has a hard cap.

I write in The Good Place, so I'm spoiled for choice this year.

Even if I weren't, though, I also write in another 5-10 small fandoms with at least 1-2 (and in some cases 10+) requests. Some of those people overlap, but I still have ~50+ non-TGP signups I could potentially treat, easy.

Yeah, that's where I'm at. I think I've maybe once had to decide between recipients.
