Pretty much, yeah.

I can kinda handle Barbie being called Barbara by strangers, or when the narrative gets more terse, or if the setting is verious historical or serious business. But I'd still expect her friends and possibly love interest to nickname her Barbie, and for that to be name I see the most in the fic. I'd find it much more distracting if Barbie became Babette just to fit the french revolution AU better, and I had to keep reminding myself through the fic who tf is this Babette person.

AUs kinda hang onto characterization by a thread as it is, so the less you disconnect the characters from who they originally are, the better.
