there's a higher chance your recip will get a treat than in other exchanges.

There's likely to be a larger pool of potential writers, but I would have thought something like Chocolate Box or Trick or Treat would generate more treats, given that the word count is so low and treating so encouraged (spreadsheets as to who has one gift only, treats not becoming gifts). I've certainly had more luck getting treats in other exchanges personally.

+1

There's a larger spread for number of possible gifts in Yuletide, but chances are very high you'll still only get one. If what you're after is lots of treats, Trick or Treat, Chocolate Box, or Multifandom Drabble are your best bets.

This. Treats are a thing that happen in Yuletide. Treats are a thing that are encouraged in Trick or Treat or Chocolate Box. Those exchanges are designed for people to (hopefully!) get multiple treats. I've always gotten the feeling from the Yuletide mods (as a collective, not anyone specifically) that they're a bit annoyed by treats, and they want you to be more involved in your assignment.

A lot of people seem to half-ass their assignment if they don't like it, in order to get on writing treats that they do. I don't blame the mods for being annoyed.

Most Yuletide participants don't write any treats, though. Statistically speaking, the most common thing in Yuletide is to write your assignment (whether half- or whole-assed) and then that's it.

There were 166 people on the prolific writers list last year, which isn't even 10% of the number of people who signed up. The pool of treaters is relatively small, and the pool of people who half-ass their assignments and then write treats has to be a subset of that.

tl;dr The number of people who half-ass their assignments to write treats is almost certainly smaller than the number of people who half-ass their assignments and then do nothing.

IIRC the prolific writers list didn't include everyone who had written a treat, only those who wrote 3+ fics, so at least 2 treats.

Not necessarily that either. It's complicated by people who write multiple fics because they pick up pinch hits, too. It's possible some of them wrote multiple pinch hits and no treats.

True, but the whole "people half-ass their assignments so they can go write treats" seems to imply 2+ treats. I doubt there's many people half-assiing it to go write a single 20K treat.

Or assignment + two pinch hits...

Yup - I was on the 'nice' list for a couple of years where I covered at least two pinch hits as well as my own assignment. Never actually written a treat (though this year may well be different!)

NA

Yes,this. Even when I want to write treats, I've usually done my assignment first and put everything I can into it - which varies from year to year. But sometimes I have treats on the go at the same time if I'm struggling with wordflow

Does that include socks and dentists?

Is there anything in particular that makes you say this, coalie? /curious

nayrt

Yeah, in mumble years of hanging out in IRC I've never got this impression? Obviously sometimes people have to be reminded that if a treat goes off path and the person doesn't have a main gift, it's bad form to put it in the main collection until they do, but other than that I haven't seen any drama about people half-assing their assignment in order to get treats. I only half-ass my assignment if the recip sucks, thank you.

Yeah. I suspect percentage-wise the highest numbers of treats are in Chocolate Box and Trick or Treat (where the word count is low) and smut- and kink-based exchanges like Smut Swap and Nonconathon (which had a really high number of treats relative to participants, possibly because of a few enthusiastic treaters).

Yuletide has a high number of absolute treats, but they're spread out over a huge participant pool, so the number of treats per participant is lower.
