Pollute the Air

Did your favorite fandom get rejected because it was one fic over the limit?
Have you just fallen in love with a new fandom the day after nominations ended?
Or are you morbane?

On a similar vein, how do coalies feel if there's a canon that's been adapted into another medium (say manga to anime), and the versions are basically the same, but the adaptation only covers part of the original canon, and someone requests it but only knows the adaptation?

Asking because I'm thinking of requesting an anime adaptation that doesn't differ significantly from the manga afaik but I haven't read the manga, and wonder if I should before requesting it. I think AO3 combines them as a single fandom.

As someone who's in a number of fandoms like that, it's fine with me. I pretty much go into exchanges expecting that my recipient might only be familiar with one version or the other. And if I decided to request Chihayafuru this year I'll be in that same boat, knowing only the anime canon.

Totally fine. Happens all the time. Just be clear about how you want your writer to handle it.

"I am only familiar with [version of canon], and I would appreciate not getting spoilers for other versions."

"I have only read [___], but I'm 100% fine with any kind of spoilers."

"I really like [___], so please focus on that and don't make anything from another version a pivotal part of your fic."

etc.

If the manga and anime (or X original canon and Y adaptation canon) fandoms overlap heavily and are often colloquially referred to as the same fandom, I think it's perfectly fine to only know X or Y and request the fandom. I would not, however, offer a fandom like that unless I was familiar with or willing to become familiar with both X and Y.

Cool. Yeah, I wasn't planning on offering it, but thought I might look through people's requests for it in case I can fill requests that only require knowing the anime version.

I wrote for a recipient in your situation. They'd seen the anime, and I had, too, but I'd also read the entire manga. The manga extended 3 or 4 volumes beyond the end of the anime, and contained a HUGE character reveal not touched upon in the anime.

Their letter didn't specify avoiding manga spoilers, but as someone who avoid spoilers herself whenever possible, I didn't want to risk that huge reveal, just in case she wanted to read the manga some day. So I set my fic after the anime, and ignored the later manga volumes. I said as much in my beginning A/N.

I suggest in your letter, you specify you've only seen the anime. You also should decide if you care about any potential manga-version differences or spoilers, and say as much. Having a definite answer about the different versions can help your author know they aren't committing a potentially spoilery or confusing faux pas. ^^

Just make it clear which part of the canon you're familiar with when you write your request. I tend to assume the anime is more widely known than the manga, especially if it's a newer adaption, and base things around that.

If you're offering take a look at the manga and see if it would be something you'd be okay with marathon reading and be aware that spoilers may show up in people's prompts.
