If the manga and anime (or X original canon and Y adaptation canon) fandoms overlap heavily and are often colloquially referred to as the same fandom, I think it's perfectly fine to only know X or Y and request the fandom. I would not, however, offer a fandom like that unless I was familiar with or willing to become familiar with both X and Y.

Cool. Yeah, I wasn't planning on offering it, but thought I might look through people's requests for it in case I can fill requests that only require knowing the anime version.
