I read loads of fandoms I'm not usually in at yuletide. Basically I open up every canon I'm familiar with and so long as the summary/tags don't have one of my DNWs then I red everything. It's part of the fun, finding fic for things I never imagined someone writing for.

I don't read my recipient's fic, there's no guarantee that will help to write them a fic, what if what they like to read and what they're good at writing don't match up? Or maybe they've written something they love in one fandom, but not in others, I figure you're better going by what they actually ask for rather than trying to guess what they might want.
