There's a bigger consensus about liking "good" comments than about liking letters vs. blank sign-ups. When it comes to the latter, there's no way to make everyone happy because about half of them love elaborate letters and details and half of them loathe them and will only treat if they don't have to click through.

There are tons of people who'd rather have a short thank you or kudos than an elaborate lie.

Sure, but if the choice is between a four-word comment or a kudos vs. an elaborate, genuinely excited comment, most people (not all) would prefer the latter.
